i was considering purchasing either a cold steel recon scout in sk 5 or kabar usmc knife. they both have similar blade length, etc and was wondering which you guys out there would recommend. also, if anyone knows an exceptional online dealer, i would greatly appreciate that too. thanks for all your help guys.

I love the Kabar company, but I'll have to admit that the CS Recon Scout is a stouter knife than the regular military style Kabar.

What are you planning on doing with it? If you are wanting to beat it through 5" or 6" thick logs, or use it as a sharpened pry bar, you're better off with the CS.

For anything else, I'd take the Kabar every time. They also have the Becker line of knives, specifically designed for rugged outdoor use, and the Johnson Adventure Blades Potbelly, which I have and ABSOLUTELY love. All of these are cheaper than the CS Recon Scout and they're made in America too, of 1095 Cro-Van high carbon steel, at 56-58RC.

Here's my Potbelly.

I think Cold Steel is the one to go with. Better ergos, better blade shape, steel quality is about the same, but maybe I'd give CS the slight edge.

what are you using it for? for woods use where you will be batoning a lot, the recon scout shines, and for prying the recon scout shines.

on the other hand the ka-bar is lighter, has better steel in my opinion, i say cuts better, has a much cooler history, and is really a great all around knife

I don't think you can really go wrong with either knife, so i would recommend going with whatever your gut feeling on the matter is. ( I know my gut would try to tell me to get them both, even if i had to scrimp and save for a while to do it. LOL)

Both are great knives. The Recon is heavier as others have said, and probably closer to the Ka-Bar short heavy bowie than the USMC.

Have a look at Becker Knife and Tool by Ka-Bar, and Ontario Knife Co's Spec Plus and Ranger lines.
