Now that the Olympics own the Opera house, my place of work, I have to leave my knife at work and walk the crowds to where my bike is parked patting my pocket where my SOCOM used to be and suffering withdrawl

. This makes me hanker for a low profile neck knife...I'll see today what kind of metal detectors are used (walkthru or handheld), but in the meantime I'd appreciate any suggestions for a useable low resonance blade and sheath. If discussing this in general is a nono then feel free to email me, thanks.

Ferret, I just saw a news report about the security down there, looks like they had both walk through and wands. The report showed a quick shot of a fellow with a SAK Classic on his key chain, he could be heard saying “It’s just a penknife…” It looks pretty rough for you.

For Gods sake, man, it just isn’t safe for a Rigger not to have a knife. Sorry I don’t have any good suggestions for a non-ferrous neck knife, but I do wish you luck.

Newt Livesay makes a knife called the 'NRG' that is G10.
Maddog makes a knife called the 'Frequent Flyer' that is made out of G11(?? maybe).
Why don't ya get a carpenters pencil?? Nice, and big and flat.
You could always order some G10 and make your own.

Since this (Olympics) will last only a few weeks, and 'made to order' is obviously not in that time frame, how about finding another suitable, hnadheld, non-metallic self defense object.

- wood, plastic small club
- plastic kubaton
- "Stinger"
- some of the newer polymer kitchen tools (spatulas & such) are made with strong, hard polymers. They already have a handle, just hack off the tool end, make it pointy and put it in yer pocket.
- metal barrel ball point pen
- put a small padlock on your keys, which you then carry on one of those long 'around the neck' key lanyards that all the kids are using now. You start swinging, and a little brass lock will do a lot of damage, and probably pass you thru checkpoints as harmless

Thanks guys, will grin and bear it (or bend over...) and just get used to leaving a knife at work. BTW, knives and multitools are getting confiscated i.e. taken and not returned later. Sux massively.
Anyhoo, what's the detection "imprint" of titanium like? Or talonite?

E-mail me at: army@home.se

That was very kind of you.
BTW I hope that you don't get caught (added mass material detection device for example)
As a general rule an innocent object IE cane, super heavy belt, bandana w. object inserted, etc. will be forgiven if used in self defense. A concealed weapon (and one designed to evade detection will be considered "super evil") could be considered an act of "premeditation" and the BOHICA.
Be safe (or lucky)

This response may not be liked but!

I'm just woundering sitting here if this question is really appropiate.

I'm not saying Ferrit has bad intentions.

But should we be providing this kind of information.

Even though I believe If someone can carry a pen I should be able to carry my knife.

Jonas you good thing, you gots mail

I've found there's worse things than metal detectors...that's being told there will be metal detectors all day on the Triathlon days only to find the security measures are in place only for the duration of the event. Both days I've started work during the medal ceremonies (a prime time for a rampage IMO) and been waved thru, go figure!

Probably a good thing the tools are at work, though, with the crowds of drunken revellers chanting "Ozzie Ozzie Ozzie, oi oi oi!" every 30 seconds. Keeping cool...

Wolf, our postings crossed...you concerns are warranted, I'm not advocating invisibles to young 'uns and I'm not about to run amok myself...I'm thinking more of perchance finding some fools trying to mess with my motorbike (I've gotta park offsite in an alleyway for the games) at midnight for example. Perhaps the thread could get shunted to Prac Tac...

well im glad im NOT there...but thats beside the point...i met a guy at the blade show in costa mesa last week...martial arts instructor...who wears a titanium knife in a sheath under his arm (armpit area) and has gone thru numerous airports (no international flights) with said tool in place...however....you will be highly suspect if they find it there....and could get into trouble!

BTW, mother in law is staying for the duration of the games, TV coverage 24 hrs a day...no escape!

Un-Detectable Neck Knife?
Hmmmm send me $1,000 I have just what you need!

It is an invisble knife in a transparent sheath that hangs on clear beaded chain, really weighs almost NOTHING, hence the high price! but when you need it, it'll be there hanging on your neck....problem is with these knives, my clients seem to have a problem locating the knife once they place the chain around their neck....funny that!

So let me know David and I'll get the blade polished up as best I can and get it down to you!

Gimme' five bucks and I'll mail you a CHOPS (Chang Ops) Street Scalpel! The wood fiber blade (cardboard) is completely undetectable and can give vicious paper cuts if you try hard enough. In fact, it is so vicious that these knives are now banned in the state of California!

Or if you give me six bucks, I can get you a Mad Chang AJAK (Asian Janitorial Assault Knife)! #4/4 (the last Mad Chang AJAK prototype model, before the first production run of 20)

Many threads in the past have been dedicated to this delicate issue.

As for the detectors, read some fine literature at:
http://www.detection.com/Security/

Also see:
http://www.millivision.com/gscanner.html
http://www.protovale.co.uk/abtpi.html

These, and other detectors, are able to find any irregularity in the human body - including a simple plastic bag filled with water!!!

So - judging by what I heard of the level of security in the Olympic village - it is better NOT to try and hide a neck knife on your person.

Airports are a different matter - if you want more info - email me for further details...

And if you feel naked not having your socom with you, try make-shift weapons.

There has been a thread about that recently with many a beautiful ideas..

Hey Ferret - just realized you are also a motorcycle freak...just like me!

Two good option against would-be-bike-hassles:

A good U lock is a formidable weapon. Also swinging a helmet is very efficient.

If you are on your way - then using your helmet-covered forehead can prove traumatic to others...
