I want a large wood's chopper am thinking of eiter the bk9 or the ka bar large heavey bowie. Which one do you think would work better?

Any input/recommendation between the two would be great.

How about that Busse Bushwacker Mistress
its at cost at the busse factory store.
I got 1,havent used it yet but feels really nice.
not too thick either.

There was a thread (or two) on exactly this just a week or so ago. The general consensus is, go with the BK-9.

A $15 machete or hatchet from Walmart will be far superior to a big knife for chopping.

Now that I can get on board with, although — if it were me — I would probably spend an extra $10 and go with a Condor.

I don't know about the Becker, but I really liked my KaBar heavy bowie. I ended up trading it since I pretty much never used it, I really regret losing it.

I have a BK9 and it is really good. Be careful though, sometimes it chops right through what you are aiming for (and cracks your chopping board in half):

I also have a KA-BAR Kukri Machete and it is even better at chopping (11.5" Blade) - I paid $46 for this.

Any day now my 15" (total length) Ganga Ram Khukuri from Himalayan Imports should turn up, which I am sure will be an even better chopper.

Here's a couple of knives to consider:

Just don't get your machete from Wal*Mart! :barf: At the very least get yourself a $6.00 Tramontina! Or better yet, grab a Condor.:thumbup:

Out of those two, I'd get the BK9. If you are going to get a machete, I would get a Tram or a Condor. Or perhaps wait a bit and get the ESEE Lite machete.

Those cheap wally world hatchets are worthless junk. I would rather have a sharp rock.

Don't forget the Ontario rtak II, around $100 and a beast of a blade. Also the coming soon ESEE Jungalas - $170. Also, the Ontario SP-5, which I have read here is actually a better chopper then the Ka-Bar heavy bowie and about the same price. Basically it's all about how much you want to spend. If I had no other big knives and Only $50 - it would probably be the SP-5. If you can spend more, go for the Becker as long as you have decent size hands.

You're missing the point.

And BTW, I didn't say I had a machete from Walmart. Mine are GI. I think I do have a hatchet from WM, the product of poor planning during a truck camping excursion with the kids, but I haven't seen it for a while.

I don't use a knife to chop. Neither did lumberjacks. They used choppers to chop. I also don't try to skin an animal with my rifle. It shows a basic lack of understanding of the uses of tools. And ignorance of physics.

If you want to use a large knife as a chopper, you also better be darned good at sharpening knives and understand the different types of edges necessary for chopping versus precision cutting.

Like i said, a $15 Walmart hatchet or machete is a better chopper than any large knife.

If you want a large knife because you like it, so be it, but stop trying to justify it with some of these nonsensical arguments. I admit that I like plenty of things that aren't particularly pragmatic.

I will concede that the knife is the appropriate choice for large pieces of fruit or vegetables.

I don't want to hijack this thread, see the "why the big knife" thread for more discussion about the hatchet vs knife thing...

On the same piece of hardwood, I will put my NMFBM from busse against any walmart machete or hatchet and be done while you're dented machete is still wedged in the wood 1 inch through.

This guy says he's deciding between two knives.
Both the Kabar Heavy Bowie and the BK-9 are great and will serve you well. I own both and they work well as choppers. The BK-9 handle is too slippery for me but if you dimple, groove, or roughen the scales you can improve the grip. Or buy the optional micarta scales. The BK-9 will slice better with its thinner factory edge. I find it easy to chop with the Heavy Bowie because of the shape of the pommel. I don't even need a lanyard with that knife.
