I`m looking for a hard use, camp/survival knife. I`m looking for 10" (+ or -) in the $200 range (+ or -).

What`s out there?

Himalayan Imports has many offerings. Pop over to that part of the forums and see if you may be interested.

Check out the Becker Brute, or some of the offerings from Mineral Mountain: www.plan-a.org/mmhw

I particularly like the survival bowie, and will probably end up getting one as soon as I am not so financially challenged

Another vote for the Becker Brute!

How about a Bill Siegle knife? His knives are excellent, and TOUGH!

Another vote for Bill Siegle, I am anxiously awaiting a knife from him, and have had a number of his knives, good work.

They may not be as indestructible as a Busse, but if you like something with a more traditional look, the Marbles Trailmaster is a beautiful knife, and they cut like Blazes. At least, everything I've ever handled from Marbles has.

Full convex grind, 52100 steel, a great combination.

Busse Basic 9 for $230 from 1StopKnifeShop. Indestructo knife with a lifetime "you break it, we'll replace it" warranty. Busses have earned their reputation for being unbelievably tough blades. They also have the most comfortable handles I've found on a blade, YMMV. They are easily worth their price. If repeat buying is any indication of customer satisfaction, I believe about 75% of all Busse owners have more than one Busse knife and around 60% own three or more.

If you don't want to go the Busse route, Becker blades offer great bang for the buck in big blades. Newt Livesay makes some bigger blades in 1095 steel (RTAK and RCM models). Then there is Trace Rinaldi's Armegeddon (1/4" thick 10" long 154CM/A2/BG42 blade), but it costs double your price limit. ;)

In that price range, RokJok has the right idea! If you look around some, you might even be able to find them cheaper than $200. I got mine for $100 on sale!

The basic 9 is an unbelievably tough knife. I have beat the crap out of mine the whole time I've had it and even though it has lots of battle scars and lots of the coating is coming off, it still keeps a great edge. I used mine 2 days ago to chop down several trees ranging from 2" to 6" in diameter, and cut them into 2 foot sections to dry for firewood.

The INFI steel Busse uses justifies their price - they stay sharp an incredibly long time! If you go with the basic 9 you will not regret it!

What about a Kukri?
My survival experience is limited, but I personally think it's an excellent blade style. I know Cold Steel makes some nice ones for about $120 or thereabouts. Also, the review of the Gurhka? House ( just how is that spelled anyway) Kukri's in Tactical Knives from about a year ago rated their brand highly. My personal example is an old "beater" that looks like it was brought back from Nepal about the time that WWII ended. However, even with a fairly beaten edge it still chops fairly well, although the biggest thing I've tried to fell with it so far has been a 2 inch sapling. Best of luck in your search.
