Any advice on a good basic book on blacksmithing would be appreciated
also something a bit more technical that explains what's actually happening to the metal when it's worked.
Thanks

The Art of Blacksmithing, by Alex Bealer and Practical Blacksmithing and Metalworking by Blandford are both good references Tom. If I had to choose between them I'd go with The Art of Blacksmithing. Try half.com for a used one. You can get some fantastic deals on books of all kinds there.

The Art of Blacksmithing is at Barnes and Noble on their clearance rack for 9.00 if you have a store close to you.

This is very interesting. Up til now I have been only making knives by stock removal and have been wanting to try my hand at pounding steel. I was at a book store last night and picked up a book on blacksmithing that I saw in the sales bin. Turnes out that it is The Art of Blacksmithing by Bealer. There were multiple copies. I live in Canada. It is interesting that this book is on sale here too in the clearance bins of the local bookstores. It seems the warehouses must be clearing this book off its shelves. This book should be very easy to find at the moment locally.

Take Care

Thanks for the tip on the sale book. You people are awesome
I'm looking today.
I recall books in the past that were readily found, closed out , then end up costing $1oo when they're out of print.
