Need Clarification: 2015 G-10 Espada XHP DLC

Hi Cold Steel,

In the lock strength video for CS Medium Espada vs ZT0350, Mr Demko mentioned that the new XHP DLC coated Medium G-10 Espada will come in Flat Grind instead of the old hollow grind. However I just received my new XHP Medium G-10 Espada(SKU#: 62NGCM) today and the blade is still hollow ground.

Can you clarify if the grind has really been change, or the plan to use flat grind has been scraped? Or is this similar to the Finn Wolf where the very advance batch had zero hollow ground instead of a true scandi grind?

TBH it's a bummer since the main reason for my purchase was because of the supposedly new flat ground blade...

----------
P.S. - I've bought enough 2015 CS to know that the one i received was the real deal, not a knock off. You can't really fake that new DLC coating, plus i own the old Espada.

Hi hkyew
I'm sorry, I have not seen a production model, I have only handled the prototype
To the best of my knowledge the new models have a saber grind, and are flat ground from that bevel instead of hollow ground like the older models.
It leaves a little more "meat" on that blade

Customer services may be able to clarify for you. They can be called toll free directly at (800) 255-4716
Thanks

Thanks for the clarification. Yeah i was really hoping that was the case that's why i got excited and bought it when the Med G-10 Espada first came in stock last week. However to my disappointment i received a hollow ground version, just like the old one. The blade is DLC coated and is printed with CS's new logo and marked CTS XHP, all signs showed that it's the real deal, hence my questions here.
I was just wondering whether the flat grind is ever going to make production or not, if not there is really no point going through the expenses to return the item and paying the shipping + restocking.

I'm sorry I'm not much help. I haven't handled that knife yet.
I did get to play with the Large G10 prototype over a year ago and I'm pretty positive it was flat ground from that bevel.
I am sure that the customer services guys will be able to help you!
Thanks and have a great day

Update: called the customer services today but they don't know the answer yet and will get back to me when they've got more info. Knifecenter posted a video of the new Med Espada today(link below) and the blade also has rather deep hollow ground. I can only assume that the production has hollow grind, unless they changed it on the future runs, like what happened to the Finn Wolf..

Here are some links to info indicating it was suppose to be flat ground but as the OP has indicated pictures on the internet and his experience indicates the Espada has a hollow grind still.

http://coldsteelforums.com/m216912.aspx

and Cold Steel's website says "The Espada's beautiful, flat ground, blades are made from premium American CTS XHP Alloy Steel. This USA powdered “super steel” was chosen for its ability to not only take a super-fine cutting edge, but to hold it for an exceptionally long time."

would be nice to know either way.

+1 I would still like to find out. Called CS customer service, they don't know the answer, said will check and get back to me via email. Follow up never came. If it's listed as flat ground in official description but consumer is getting hollow ground, that's borderline false advertising. I already had an Espada and the flat grind is probably my main reason for getting the new one since I'm excited about the change.

This isn't the first time that they have mixed up details like this.

When the Hold Outs were first introduced in 2011, they said that it had a hollow-ground blade. But it is flat-ground.

This is an old thread but I don't see any conclusion. Are they flat ground or still hollow ground?

It's flat ground. I had one.

Thanks, I was just curious because I've been carrying my XHP Med Espada for the past few days. It's hollow ground. It's not as deep a hollow grind as on the Recon 1. It seems plenty robust. I wonder why they switched to a flat grind on the Espada series but not on the Recon series. I would think that the Recon series would be more intended for hard use where the added strength of a flat grind might be desired. Personally I like a hollow grind on a folder. Flat grinds are good too though.

No it's hollow. They only changed the large and the XL Espada to flat grind. Medium is still hollowground. I called CS and that's what they told me. I also have the new medium Espada DLC and I can confirm that it's deep hollowground. It's a bummer though, as I bought it because Demko mentioned in one of his test videos that it's flat.

Oh, ok, that makes more sense.

I'll chime in to ask my question since this seems the proper thread to do so:
The new CTS-XHP Recon 1 XL in Serrated Edge has a chisel ground like the Rawles Voyager or is it a flat grind like the big bad plain edge? (can't call CS as I live overseas!)

Thanks in advance
