California state law actually doesn't place any limitations on blade length for folders. Up in the Bay Area where you are, local law does place a limit on blade length but only when the person carrying the knife is "loitering" -- language that's basically meant to target street gangs. So buy and carry your ridiculously large knife with pride. In all honesty, neither the large or the XL will leave my house. I live in California so our knife laws are pretty strict. I'm mostly getting these for my collection! I saw the XL on youtube and it looks ridiculously big. However, I still want it![]()
I bought the expensive version large Espada long before then new G 10 versions were offered. [yeah it's big and it's bad] However I'm definitely getting the new XL Espada as soon as it hits my local knife store.
I'm not moved at all by the argument that you can buy a fixed blade knife ,with a longer blade than the XL, that is actually shorter overall, than the XL when open. The whole point is that you can carry the XL CLOSED in your pocket which you can't do with the fixed blade. Furthermore the actual REACH of the XL is greater than all but the biggest fixed blade knives. I would argue that in an SD situation ,at least, it's the reach of the knife that is crucial, not the length of the blade.
Good point but It's not an argument at all my friend. I just think it's something to keep in mind how large it is overall and closed. Also, it does have a greater reach because of the large handle but it's also more area for someone to potentially grab onto it and wrestle it from your hands in a defensive situation. If you're gripping it higher up than you lose the reach advantage. Just something to think about.
I agree with you about the real estate available for grabbing. In Arnis and FMA, anything that protrudes from your grip, can be grabbed and used for a disarm(good luck with that though) like the butt of an ulisi(fighting stick), or in this case, the extra real estate of the XL espada(if you choke up on it).
Yeah and even if it was gripped from the back most part of the handle then you would have more reach but almost half of it would be handle and not blade.
