Yesterday I got an email from comcast that they were switching antivirus programs from McAfee to Norton.I switched now my whole PC is messed up.

I uninstalled both since & tried to do a Dr.Web Cure it scan,but I can't download anything.I can open my email,but I can't open individual messages.I click on them & nothing happens.
Even on this forum I can't click on anything(like smilies on the right & the quote & image things above). The only thing I can click on is the bottom tabs "Preview Post" etc..

I figured maybe it's an IE problem,so I tried to install Firefox,but like I said "I can't download ANYTHING".
I'm so disgusted with this. Please give me some advise if you can.

Thanks

try searching for TrendMicro housecall, it's a free online one-shot virus scan. It may run depending on whether your computer has the proper active x controls installed. It should, lemme know. I have another couple aces up my sleeve. ;)

I tried opening system restore. All I get is a blank window...just a blank white page.

Doesnt sound like a virus , sounds like you have corruption somewhere.

Hey bro , try to do a full check disk on your pc , it will probably take an hour.

Open My Computer

right click on C drive and choose properties

Click on Tools tab

Under Error Checking click Check Now

Check both boxes and click Start

It will ask if you want to do it next time you restart , click yes , restart your PC and let it Checkdisk run , as I said it will take about an hour dependsing on the size of your drive.

This process will look at everything including Windows , hopefull if any necessary files are corrupt it will replace or fix them.

If this doesnt work , restart and go into safe mode -

Safe Mode - press F8 repeatedly when your pc is booting , after your bios screen , your keyboard will beep in protest but let it beep away , sometimes it's easy to miss your window to go into Safe mode.

Once your almost there it should ask if you want to go into Safe mode or restore your pc to an earlier time ( something like that I cant recall the proper terms , 12.5 hour day with a 6 hour drive , im tired :) ) choose restore and figure out the rest , its pretty user friendly.

System restore usually takes about ten minutes.

If that doesnt work.... it's possible you may have to reinstall Windows !

I have Comcast too , Mcafee sucks , their version of Norton is not much better IMO. I started using Symantec Endpoint 4-5 months ago and for the first time in a long time I've been absolutly problem free ! this is on a two year install of Windows.

Microsoft doesnt tell end users that a fresh install of Windows every so often is as beneficial as changing the oil in your car.

Tostig,Thanks a lot,for the "step by step".That sounds like it might just work.I'm going to do that first thing in the morning.

 Thanks again!

Maybe also do a quick check on your automatic start up programs. If there's a virus that's active and set in your start ups, you can uncheck it there so that it remains dormant. It'll still be in the computer, but it won't be able to turn on.

Click "start"
Click "run"
Type in "msconfig", hit enter
Click on "start up" tab
Click "disable all" (it's safe to disable all start up programs)
Click "OK"
Restart your computer and see if it's still behaving the same way.

if you would like some good advice, do not pay for antivirus, its a damn waste. if you feel the need to pay for it, get avg. if not, get avg free. also, use firefox or google chrome, not internet explorer. tostig pretty much covered everything else.

:thumbup:Thanks everyone.I was on the phone & online with Symantec tech support for about 2hrs.Some indian(from India) guy fixed my computer to almost like new, through remote assistance.:)
He never did tell me exactly what was causing the problem, but I'm just glad it's fixed.

I'm using Mozilla/Firefox now.I'm still getiing used to it.It's faster than IE7.I think I'm gonna stick with it.

i just use xp's firewall, windows defender and avast! free anti-virus (and firefox browser)...defender and avast have blocked the few attempts i've been attacked, so i've never been disabled...

my problem with symantic, mcafee, other "big" anti-virus companies is that their software bloats and slows the machine down; AND you pay for the privilege of having them do so...i have yet to have ANY virus issues from using free avast!...and i've been using it for over 5 yrs. now...
