Well, don't really need it. My BOL is a military career guy who is now in the full time Nat'l Guard in Philadelphia nearing the end of his career. My sister keeps telling him his combat days are over because he's old and a supply sargent (he was in Viet-Nam and Desert Storm) but I guess old soldiers never die. Anyways, he has in his head that he wants a heavy duty double edged knife.

I suggested he look at Ranger Knives, Cold Steel Peacekeeper (doesn't like the steel); Cold Steel Tai Pan (a little pricey), Cold Steel OSS (anybody tried it), Boker Smatchet (probably too heavy and too pricey).

What do you guys have to say? Frankly, the Peacekeeper looks pretty good to me because of the price, but I'm not sure about CS's 420 "sub zero" quench. I'm thinking if he doesn't get one by Christmas, I'll get him one and then price definately is important.

Thanks.

Fallkniven. Can't remember the model name, but you won't have to worry about crummy steel or workmanship, that's for sure.

FN MC1 Mine clearing knife:

They also have a small double edged bootdagger.

There is also SOG, they make a double edged dagger.
This one has AUS8:

Double edged does NOT necessarily mean dagger. Personally, I would prefer something like extrema ratio's col. Moshkin, or a Rob Patton double edge, or even a CS black bear. than a dagger, I think these are much more functional. Then again, I wouldn't have to worry about it, I'd just grab my Busse fighter.

The CS Tai Pai is an excellent knife, just about everyone who has had one here really loves it. The tip is wide enough to both stab excellently and not break, and the edge geometry isn't too thick for cutting. As far as price goes...... How much is his life worth?

Don't ask his Mother-in-Law (my mom) that question

A good double-edged knife is the Cold Steel Peacekeeper. I am no expert on metalurgy, but the 420 steel used by CS takes and holds a good edge. My peace keeper came razor sharp. I have a United copy of the Ek 4. It just won't take a good edge. Not all 420 steels are equal. I bought that knife to display anyway. The Cold Steel is for real. It is light, fast, and sharp. The handle feels great and the cost was about $53.00.

You want a heavy duty dagger. Why would 420 be a bad choice in such a blade? It's very tough and the fact that it doesn't hold an edge very well is a non-issue in such a single-purpose knife.

I gave one of my buddies over in afghanistan right now a cold steel OSS, fine knife really. I wouldn't pry too much with the tip but that thing stabbed like nobody's business.

Yeah, the OSS would be a good choice. I believe it's also available in a coated Carbon V version as well (if you're positive that you don't want 420).

How about a Boker A/F Combat Knife? They have a double edge, an excellent handle, a brass guard, and are 440C steel.

I have a cold steel ODA. The top edge is not sharpened. I guess it is a kraton handled copy of the Randall. Is the Randall double edged? What does ODA stand for anyway? I like the Peacekeeper better.

I will 2nd the Boker A/F Dagger. If you don't mind spending the cash the Col Moscin(sp?), double edged and still some utility use.

Why double edged?

Other than knife fighting there is no practical reason for them.

SOG's Pentagon is one of my favorites. It's not only a hell of a stabber but since one side's serrated it actually comes in handy sometimes. No guard though, don't know how you feel about that...

... A little pricier would be the MoD Beshara or Nightwing, either of which are very, very cool.. and around 200 bucks, so yeah....

If it were me, I'd go with a Pentagon or a Boker A/F, probably the boot knife version.

I bet that if you looked around, you could find some of the older peace keepers in Carbon V. The OSS is a great knife as well, although I don't care too much for the craton subhilt. Not sturdy enough IMO. The Black Bear Classic by Cold Steel is great, but again, you're looking at the higher price range.
