Hey, looking to take a trip soon. I have to fly cross-country and I'm taking all carry on. Any recommendations for a cheap knife, easily found at outdoor stores or wally world?

My fall back is an easily found SAK, but I thought I'd take the opportunity to maybe trying something new as I have several SAK's. Other knives I already own that I want to avoid are Kershaw's OD-1 and the Chive (only want to avoid as I already own and love them, no hard feelings here, just looking for something new). So pretty much anything else I'll try. I'll be carrying it for only a week and a half, then it'll likely be handed off to a family member before I get back on the plane. Oh, under 3", no lock preference, and easily found.

Thanks crew!

Hi,

You could look for something in a China-made Buck slip-joint. They generally run under $20 from most bigbox chain stores. It would be different than a SAK.

Check laws but the new byrds are out! Ffg cara cara and meadowlarks!

I just put in for two cara caras, they look really promising!

Wal-mart sells many sub $40 Kershaw knives. There are Skyline, Zing, Needs Work, and Barrage. If you're lucky you'll find Leek and Blur at clearance price.

If you have family at the other end, just mail yourself anything you like. For that matter, buy anything you like and have it mailed to where you are going.

But then he doesn't get to try out a new knife and a family member misses out on an opportunity to get a free knife!

The single blade one cost me about $9.00. As long as you're not planning on batonning it through a stump or stabbing refrigerators or tires you should be okay. :p

Several Case slipjoints can be had for less than $40. The yellow handle ones with CV blades make great users.

Buck slipjoints (and even the 110 at Wal-Mart) are another good option.

I don't know how easy Opinels are to find in the US, a #8 (in carbon steel) would serve you well and you'd have money left over.

Spyderco Persistance and Tenacious (or the new FRN UKPK if you prefer non-locking).

Any of the G-10 Byrds.

kershaw skyline was the first thing to come to mind, but if you're going somewhere with a William Sonoma kitchen store close by, they sell Opinel - hard to beat a #6 in the value department.

You can also buy a slightly more expensive knife and mail it to yourself (trying to beat it home). I like the SAK Executive. It has a real fingernail file.

I have several Opinels already. Fun and cheap. I'll take a look at the Skyline, don't know much about it. If there was somewhere that I could find Spyderco Byrd knives, I'd likely pick one of those up, but I can't think of any place that has them.

Thanks for the suggestions!

At Walmart, my top choice would be the Kershaw Zing, followed by the Spyderco Native if they still sell them.
