Hello folks,

Has been a long time since I got to finish something, but it finally happened.
This is a puuko, made from an 12C27 blade which had to be reground and polished because it sustained too many scratches.

I really love how the superglue finish brings out the wood. From left to right: Ilex, amboinaroot, brown horn, ilex, zebrano, brown horn, brass, 12C27 blade.
This is the 8th knife I make.

next: Beercapdamascus.
My first try at damascus, project 7 since staring to make knives.
Note : Done with a 1.5 kilo hammer, some borax, a cokesfire, a log of steel as anvil, files and handsanding paper.

About one crate of beercaps went into it.
Forged on O-1, the other side is the same, about 8 X 8 cm, 1 cm thick.

I could have polished it a little more, but the scatches on it are from transport to the scanner. The 6 holes I drilled before straightening it was for contrast, but they wouldn't have been nececairy in retrospect.

Comments please.

Bart,

Can you elaborate on your "beercap" damascus - material & method? What kind of hardness can you get out of it? Thanks!

Very nice!!!
I Love Puukkos!!!
I would also like to hear more about the damascus.

I think Tim Lively posted a pic of a damascus knife done by Tai that was made from bottle caps and cast iron soil pipe. I am guessing the iron gave it enough carbon to harden properly.
Your damascus if not hardenable would make nice bolsters and butt caps.IMO.

Info on the beercap damascus...Let's see....
I was seriously drunk when making that (don't do this at home, kids), I remember that because I often had to dodge a hammer which did not hit the billet, but the anvil and came bouncing back.
Techinal...It's about 20 Beercaps, nailed together till you get about 1 cylinder.
Then you put it in the flames, and all the paint and plastics get burned off...When they're gone, I started fluxing it with plain borax....when it was yellowhot, I banged it that hard that I could see borax flying around like fireworks. Then I filed one side clean, put it on a bar of O-1 and forgewelded that on. The next day I did the other side after getting about 2000 beercaps from a nearby café.....
It doesn't really get hard, but it's easy to make and you can still make blades the way i made this thing, a sandwich between this stuff and O-1 or another carbon steel....
The tai goo blade has mixed in Cast iron pipe to elevate the carbon content.
