Anyone know where I could buy some of the hard foam used in gun cases? the kind you cut to fit the gun. I have a silver aluminum briefcase I no longer use and thought it would be sweet to put that foam in it and cut it to fit my favorite knives for easy carry and quick display and just because it would be cool.

Pelican sells replacement foam inserts for their cases. See if you have a case that matches one of their products. Hope you do, cause their Pick 'N Pluck foams are excellent for customization.

You can cut pretty much any foam with a sharp razor. Their Pick 'N Pluck is pre-cut squares that your rip out to fit the shape of your item.

You can sometimes get different grades and densities of foam at craft stores, fabric stores, and military surplus stores. Best bet would be to "let your fingers do the walkin'" through the phone book. It should be less expensive than purchasing direct from Pelican.

Best option would be any closed cell foam. Any open cell foam made from polyurethane will trap moisture within it's cells, which is not a good thing for a closed storage space. Not to mention that certain types of polyurethane foam degrade into a gas that can damage metal. Foam from Pelican is designed for long term storage, which can be worth it if what you are storing is of some value. Paying for the Pick 'N Pluck may not be necessary, but it really helps in making custom shaped inserts for your item. My $0.02.

but there are a few stores which sell nothing but foam and rubber products. One of them is on Canal Street in lower Manhattan just a scant 10 minutes walk from my apartment. The Stuff is kinda cheap too.

what size are you looking for?

Bottom piece 18 1/2 inches long 13-14 inches wide and 3 1/2 4 inches deep.

Top piece 18 1/2 inches long by 13-14 inches wide and 2 1/2 inches deep. roughly.

I want foam that is harder then like the foam that comes in a standard gun case, I want to be able to cut it exactly to fit each knife perfectly. Ever see the custom gun cases with the fitted foam made for just that one gun, that kind. what Tony os talking about is close but not it exactly, may have to do though if can't find what I am looking for.

but I think what you're talking about is foam with some sort of "skin" which feels almost like latex rubber. The foam is a higher density, almost like Neoprene...

The thing about this is once it's cut, it takes on the appearance of foam rubber and the exposed surface no longer has the "skin".

Yes, the stuff is available, and it's moderately priced...
I'll peep in and take a look sometime this week, but I'm gonna tell you now, it might not look as pretty as you want it to.

You might be looking for EVA foam. The "skinned" type mentioned by MM is common used as a sleeping pad. Those are a bit harder to find. Although you could just buy a sleeping pad and glue the various layers together.

Mind letting us know what you decided on? Inquiring minds want to know.

Tony what they had was like you said a pick and pluck foam but they had it in a tighter cell, it's a closed cell foam harder to the touch then the foam in most gun cases but it's setup like you described pre-scored in squares but is easily cut to fit also, I had to call them on the phone and tal to them to find what I wanted wasn't available on thier website or I never found it there. the website is www.caseman.com has a toll free number to call. I ordered 2 pieces that are 18x15x2 for 7 bucks a piece plus shipping so 14 bucks estimated shipping was around 6 bucks the lady I was talking to wasn't for sure but I had it shipped standard ground which runs about 5.95 so should be under 20 bucks. When I get it in and fix up the briefcase I'll post some picks so you can see what it looks like. By the way the briefcase itself is nice, all silver aluminum outside, the inside had standard briefcase folders and flaps all lined with a grey denium kind of material but it came with standard eggcrate kind of foam for carrying guns also. has a Smith and Wesson emblem on the top of the outside made of metal, pretty sweet briefcase. Mike Dye uses his to carry his laptop in and it works well. If you can find them they are nice for the money.

Just adding in, The total cost on the foam was $14 they did not know what shipping would be but said total should be around 20 bucks with shipping. Got a e-mail from them a little while ago stating total was 29.95???????? 15.95 for standard ground shipping for 2 pieces of Foam. I wouldnt suggest dealing with this company, since they hike a shipping charge up that high. Just poor buisness practice if you ask me.
