I'm looking for suggestions on a folder to replace my retiring Al Mar SERE. I'm looking for a beefy folder than can stand alot of abuse. I want one that wont cost an arm and a leg, say $100 and under. This knife will see some hard use.
Thanks in advance.

Rob

Benchmade 710D2, Benchmade Rukus, Spyderco Manix are a few that come to mind.

Spyderco Manix or 83mm Manix if you like lockbacks, Para-Military if you want open construction for cleaning (the tip won't be quite as robust as on the SERE or the Manix). Endura 4 in ZDP-189 or VG-10.

Benchmade 710 in D2 or HK 14200. Both of these might be outside of your $100 price limit.

Another SERE? I have the mini-SERE and Nomad and love both of them. They are primo in every category.

The first thing that comes to mind is the Spyderco Manix or Mini Manix. Or if you want to go more upscale, but tough, the I would recoomend a Sebenza.

JYD2? Cheaper and much stronger tip than the 710 and manix, especially if you can beat up a SERE. Besides, 710 and manix are out of your price range anyways.

Ooooops, I missed the under $100 mark. Sorry about that. Then get yourself a Spyderco Endura or Delica.

I do like the looks of the JYD2. I've thought about another SERE, but dont know how good the new ones are. I've had mine since the 80's and its been used for everything from cutting to prying to breaking glass. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll look into the JYD2 and the Benchmade.
Thanks
Rob

I would say the 710 would be a good call. The Manix and the military are also good choices.

I've read that the new SERE are not as strong as the older ones, b/c of the cut out in the liner. Dont know for sure, just one of the Cliff Stamp's review I've read.

Well, I made a deal today for a Spyderco Manix. If everything I've been reading about it is true, it should make a good replacement for my SERE.
Thanks for the advice

Rob

I vote for the Spyderco Military. That thing WON'T let you down.

edit: Oh! Enjoy your manix!

flyer35, you made a good choice! Thanks for letting us know that you got a Manix.

I would get the Benchmade 710 in D2 steel, serrated. I recently picked up one about a month ago. You could get one at Knifeworks for around $110 bucks not including shipping & handling. It's a very smooth and fast opener once it's broken in.
