Hi,

I am running Spybot and Adaware for internet protection.

What programs are you using for internet security?

I only use Firefox and Chrome browsers.

Thanks!

Microsoft Security Essentials. Only thing I use and I haven't had a virus in 5 years.

Glad to see you already have Spybot, it's one of my favorite programs. Having an antivirus and using browser addons allows you to block even more content, such as ads and flash from playing without your permissions. I'll link to both the Firefox and Chrome versions. You will need to allow some exceptions, very simple to do. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about these.

Flashblock - Firefox/Chrome

Adblock Plus - Firefox/Chrome

Microsoft Security Essentials - great program for being a MS product, and it's free.

I've always done well with AVG Anti-virus and Ad-Aware. They are free, and the work. At least for me.

I've always used AVG Anti-Virus, the free version. A while back though I switched to Microsoft Security Essentials. It runs more 'quietly' in the background and seems to use less system resources.

And Zone Alarm for a firewall.

For cleaning up problems on other people's computers, I use a variety of programs including Spybot Search and Destroy, and Hijack This.

Microsoft Security Essentials, it's lite and does a good job.

Also, I suggest using WOT (Web of Trust), I use it for chrome and it does a good job telling you if a website is risky.

Malwarebytes.

Spyware Blaster.

CCleaner (for temp files, etc.)

Avast free antivirus.

Online Armor firewall free.

Avast and Online Armor are the least of the evils as far as system resources. (dinosaur computer) Between these and the other programs, I stay clean. Windows Firewall and Windows security center are disabled, along with BS automatic updates. The more XP updating I did, the more things slowed down and broke-so I quit.

Ghostery is a browser tool available for Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera and Internet Explorer. It scans the page for scripts, pixels, and other elements and notifies the user of the companies whose code is present on the page. These page elements aren't otherwise visible to the user, and often not detailed in the page source code. Ghostery allows users to learn more about these companies and their practices, and block the page elements from loading if the user chooses.

GoogleSharing is a special kind of anonymizing proxy service, designed for a very specific threat. It ultimately aims to provide a level of anonymity that will prevent Google from tracking your searches, movements, and what websites you visit. GoogleSharing is not a full proxy service designed to anonymize all your traffic, but rather something designed exclusively for your communication with Google. Our system is totally transparent, with no special "alternative" websites to visit. Your normal work flow should be exactly the same.

Alright where do I begin?

First off there is some good and some bad advice in this thread so far. Everything I am typing from this point can be verified by multiple PC security forums and PC security testing sites including but not limited to Wilders, MRG, AV-Test, etc etc.

Lets start by (free stuff)....

Change you DNS: I recommend you change it in your router so everything on your network in protected. I use Norton as my primary and Comodo as my secondary.
For free real time protection (suite): You cannot go wrong with Avast, Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE.)
Free secondary scanners: MalwareBytes Antimalware (MBAM), SuperAntiSpyware (SAS), Emsisoft Emergency Kit
Browsers: FireFox, Chrome or Opera.
Browser add-ons: Web of Trust, BetterPrivacy, Adblock Plus (with malwaredomains list) and NoScript. NoScript can be/is a pain at first, but its well worth it. Some of these add-ons may or may not work with these browsers.
More advanced but still free program(s): SandboxIE (Google Sandboxie and watch some of the videos about it)

Dump/don't use; AVG, Spybot, Ad-aware.

What I really would recommend:

BUY:
SandboxIE: The paid version offers some really good options the free edition does not. Price about $50, however it is a lifetime license and can be used on as many computers "You Own".
MalwareBytes AntiMalware: The paid version offers some nice features such as real time protection and IP blocking.
Norton Internet Security, Kaspersky Internet Security, ZoneAlarm Internet security etc as you can often get a 3 user license for under $20 a year if you search properly.

IF you can/have to purchase one program go with SandboxIE.

This is a quick type up, not perfect but I will get back to it later. Good Luck.

I personally use:
ZoneAlarm Internet Security
MBAM real time
SAS real time
SandboxIE
Norton DNS
FireFox with the above mentioned add-ons and then some more.

Plenty of overlap and layers, yes its a bit over the top however I visit some risky sites and I don't always use all the programs when I am gaming.

stay away from anything symantec which is norton. they had some problems a week ago and norton is the biggest memory hog out there so if you are running a slower pc, it will make it crawl. avast antivirus is a good one to get and comodo firewall free is also good.

i have been running avast for almost 10 years and the only virus i got was my fault. i have been running comodo for maybe 6 years and it works great. you can also get avant browser and run it in private mode. it will help keep you a little safer. if you are doing a search and a website is bad it will let you know not to go there.

Norton is fine. Yes they finally did disclose the fact that a couple of their programs did get compromised (source code) however this was from older product versions and supposedly fixed the problems with those programs. They are not the first and will not be the last to have such issues in the future. Second, the whole lie about about that Norton is still bloated and slow is an outright lie that needs to go away. In fact its one of the best out there for speed and memory usage now and has been that way for about a good 2 years.

Comodo is a damn good piece of software their firewall specifically however to get the best and most secure options from it you need to run Defense+ which can be a bit hard to hard for some users as the popups (good popups) can be hard to interpret.

i run Microsoft Security Essentials and recomend it . however nothing is perfect and at my job i clean a fair amount of virusses from computers even ones protected by MSSE.

for removal i use the following utilities:
Malwarebytes
Superantispyware
Combofix
TDSSKiller
Norton Power Eraser
HitmanPro

You already have the best IMHO

There's lots to choose from.

MS Security Essentials is free and you might as well use it. Spybot S&D, and Adaware with Chrome is the combo I use on my Windows partition so I'd say you are doing great.... but I use a Mac for all of my consumer activities so no need for spyware/malware protection. Macs can get viruses in rare instances, but it's so rare I just run some free Sophos software on my mac that alerts me to malicious .EXEs in my bulk mail attachments. The stuff it finds won't run on a Mac anyway so I rarely concern myself with it.

Back in the day Spybot and Ad-Aware were the go to options, now, not so much. Now for MSE, while it's not the best it's a pretty nice piece of software for what it is. If you are willing to spend a small amount of money and get a excellent supplemental piece of software look for Malwarbytes Antimalware which includes a LIFETIME license....You can find it at a really good price with free shipping.

Overall solid setup that Free(ish) but easy to use:

Browser: Chrome/Firefox
Realtime software.
AV: MSE
AntiMalware: Malwarebytes antimalware (small price, but lifetime license)
On-demand software.
Antimalware: SuperAntispyware
