New member here. For my first post I need some advice.

My dad has never had a decent knife. Always tiny little deals he got for free that arent even worthy of being called a letter opener. This Christmas Ive decided to fix that.

Need a decent folder. Id like an assisted opener with around a 3 inch blade. Im looking in the $60 to $90 range as far as prices.

Thanks in advance guys.

Combination blade Kershaw Leek would fit the bill. It has a CPM D2 edge that not only looks good, but holds an edge quite well. I have one and it's a classy, functional folder. Here's what the blade looks like:

I recently gave my boss a regular Leek for his birthday and he likes it a lot.

Although I've never handled one, I like the looks of the somewhat larger Kersaw Shallot. There's a combination blade version with a ZDP-189 edge, as well as a CPM 110V version. Both are premium steels.

I had been looking at several Kershaws. Those are both really good looking. I came here because Im completely out of my depth with all the different steels and other more esoteric specs. The downside, if you can call it that, is now Im wanting to replace my admittedly cheap S&W folder.:D

forget the gimmicks (AOs) and get your Pops a Benchmade Mini Griptilian 555HG... it's as good or better than any AO and comes at a fair price. if you wanna spend a little more, check out the Benchmade Sequel.

What about good places to buy from? Only place near me with a lot of stuff in stock is a bass pro. From their website it doesnt look like the stock the versions with the better steels.

Best course of action, to answer your immediate question, is to stick with a quality brand name within your price range. Don't worry about steels, grinds, gimmicks. There is a wealth of choice from Benchmade, Spyderco, Kershaw etc. By picking something that looks classy, is reasonably priced and well made you won't get overwhelmed. Think about what your dad would use the knife for. most likely what 99% of us use a knife for. Cutting string, opening packages/letters, cutting an apple etc. As you gain more exposure to this rewarding hobby, you'll develop definite preferences. Welcome to Bladeforums!

p.s My vote is for a mini-griptilian by Benchmade. An excellent choice and a great gift:thumbup: If you have a Cabelas nearby you can get their exclusive D2 (an excellent type of steel) version.

edit: Just had a look at Bass Pro's website. You've got some excellent choices brother! Benchmade, Kershaw, Spyderco, Case, the list goes on! Get over there and check 'em out. From their website:

I'd go for the plain edge.

A Kershaw Blur would also fit your specifications. I have a serrated one, but if I had it to do over, I would get a plain edge model.

Thanks for all the replies guys. My brother and I will be heading to bass pro friday to check some stuff out in person. The internet links look to have much better prices than bass pro too. Good stuff guys!

the leek is a perfect gifter from the parameters you put, my leek still makes it into my pocket almost everyday
