who makes good bowie knifes?

The older Western W-49 bowie was a good knife. The older ones were carbon steel, the newer ones were 420 stainless. Not worth a crap. Hit the gun shows you might find an older one for $50. The nice thing about them is practally nobody who bought one used it in the field so you find these 25 year old knives in near new shape.

Someone is making the old Blackjack bowies again similar to the Western but with a rubber handle. Stainless, probably 440a or 440b, Not great but better than 420.
I bet they are pricey.

Cold steel makes a couple. Trailmaster I think is the name of one. Nice knife in Carbon V steel Kinda pricey.
I'm not wild about how the Kraton handle is held on with one hollow brass thong hole liner.

I'm looking at Mineral Mountain Hatchet Works. They have a bunch of large bowies in the $180-$220 range. carbon steel with micarta handles.

Have you looked at the Camillus / Fisk OVB Bowies? Pretty nice knives for the money.
Good Collecting !

That depends upon what you are seeking in a Bowie. Do you want a large camp knife, a large utility knife, or a dedicated fighting knife? If the latter, Bill Bagwell's designs come about as close to that as you'll find, whether his customs for umpteen hundred dollars or the Ontario-made production versons for much, much less. I agree 110%. Very good bowie for the money....looks great, designed by a master.

I just got my Ken Warner/Blackjack Knives Anaconda II in the mail yesterday. It's got a rubber handle, and not a traditional one, but I think it's a great knife. About the sharpest knife out of the box I've ever had, with the exception of my two Chris Reeve Knives, and the handle is super comfortable. 10'' AUS 8 blade, with a convex grind. I have to say that until I ordered it I wasn't a big fan of bowies, but I was looking for another, reasonably priced big knife to add to my collection. This one fits the bill perfectly. I haven't tried to put it through it's paces yet, but I recommend it highly, and you can get them through New Graham (www.newgraham.com) for about $130 or so with shipping.

Check out this Hen & Rooster. I bought one for my brother and it is a really nice looking knife and sheath.
The web store I buy from sells all of their knives at around 50% off retail price, which puts this $200 knife at around a hundred bucks. Total length is around 12".

I also agree, the Fisk OVB is a very nice long knife.

You could also check out Cold Steels Laredo Bowie. I have one I carry in a custom kedex rig by Mike Sastre of rivercitysheaths, it's a little heavier than the OVB, about the same length, and a solid knife with Carbon V steel which I like a lot in a commercial rendition.

The Ontario Bagwells are a solid knife for the money, but I don't personally like the steel used and sold both of mine and picked up the Laredo.

There are others, but look into these dependant on your needs.

Custom long knives are an option if you want to spend some money, you can order them as to length, materials, etc and have one custom made to your desires. Many good knife makers here would be willing to satisfy your desires and some of them are not much more than a commercial rendition.

I really like the fisk, but aren't they close to $300?
If the budget is $150, then that won't do.
If you can go to $300, then maybe something like this Fisk would be nice and with a 7" blade could be more practical.
