Any advice appreciated,

I have been looking for a good sheath knife in the $50 to $100 range. I've looked at Kabars as well as some others. I intend to use them as an outdoor knife (i.e. something to carry while backpacking etc.) I would like something that I can hack with, pry with, and otherwise give hell and have it willing to give some back.

Thanks in advance for your input.

For ultimate tough and sharp I would go for a Camillus Becker Campanion--if you don't insist on stainless steel. For stainless I would go with a Fallkniven A1 or S1. The VG-10 alloy in the Fallknivens is pretty tough and easy to keep sharp.

both of the options mentioned above are very good too.

the recon tanto by cold steel is 7+ inches cabon epoxy coated with a very good sheath. very strong tip.

the srk has the same features with a clip point and a 6+ inch blade.

good luck

Get an Ontario Spec 6 fighter. It's a Ka-bar configuration knife with an 8" (approx) blade. It's black Ti'd and makes a good outdoor knife.

Get yourself a Buck Nighthawk. This is an excellent, stout sheath knife that won't "break your bank".

I'll chime in for Marbles knives. They're good old 52100 carbon steel, and the sharpest knives I've ever felt "out of the box".

Back to the KA-BARs. I am a sucker for the stacked leather handles on thier hunting knives. Good knives for hard use, and nothing to feel too sickly about if they get lost. If you scout around, you can find them for around $20. My dad still uses one that his grandfather used. Not high end, not custom, but tough.

The Camillus Campanion is an excellent choice. I just got one myself a few days ago, and this knife is massive and tank tough.
The best price I know of for the Campanion is from Bayou Lafourche, at www.knifeworks.com

I would also recommend the Greco Companion. An excellent and bomb proof knife also. Best price for the Companion is from bladeart, at www.bladeart.com

The Busse Basic #5 or #7 are also excellent choices.
The Busse Basics are discontinued, but at least a few dealers still have some, although I don't know who they are offhand.

The best value and possibly my favorite, would be the Greco Companion. I have truly abused mine, and it still looks like new. Also, as it is made from A2 tool steel, and it is very easy to get it truly scary sharp.

In that price range the Fallknivens are very hard to beat.

One time I sold my Fallknivens with the intention of finding better fixed blades. Without going to customs or very high end stuff(e.g. Busse) I did not find anything I like better at any price.
