Need Hatchet Heads

Evening all,

I'm a novice when it comes to axe and hatchet terms, but I run a woodshop and have a gig where I need about a dozen similar hatchet heads. They have to be relatively small, 10oz head or so, no tang, 2.5" bit or so, blunt/hammer rear. I have always been a fan of the old plumb roofing hatchets (the carpenter in me), but these would be for an outdoor store and I'd laminate a handle for them. Somewhat of a pocket hatchet would be the end product. Where in the world can I get similar hatchet heads without having to forge/grind from blanks and without having to get viking inspired blanks?

Thanks in advance!

The Vaughan sub zero is a great little hatchet after a little work and is priced well at $20.
As suggested they might sell you just the heads, I've heard of them doing this.

I don't know about doing a laminate handle, but I suppose at this size it probably wouldn't break on you.

Is this project something like wings made of axes over a throne? I saw something like that the other day on Facebook, it was at an axe throwing bar.

I really do like the subzero, but Vaughan emailed back and said they wouldn’t sell just the head. I’m not looking to drill a dozen handles out to install new...but man it’s tempting to get the head.

Being a pocket hatchet, I’m not worried about the laminated handle splitting. If it does, it’s most likely due to abuse or too much “froe” use. With proper straight grain and epoxy, it should last a couple years anyways.

Thanks for the thoughts!

You wouldn't actually have to drill them out, just cut the handle off flush and knock the wood from the bottom out the top of the eye.
It won't be too hard to do on these either.
