I really need some help deciding this, guys. I have been thinking of getting either a knife for my 21st, or an old watch but, to be honest I can't decide which and cannot narrow down my choice of knife. My 21st is on the 26th of September, so I don't think there's enough time to get a custom made

So far, I have been looking at a few different knives.

I am looking at getting a sub 3.5 inch closed, knife. I was thinking of getting one hafted in a lighter ebony, or walnut but am open to most other natural handle choices if they tickle my fancy.
I am a fan of GEC's 1095, but an equally open to any good stainless. The Erics jack in 440c i got a couple of weeks ago has exceeded my expectations, and I wouldn't mind trying some higher end stuff.

The first knife I considered was an A.G. Russell mammoth ivory pinched peanut, which were sold out so I considered either the European stag, or Chinese quince versions. I was hesitant because I tend to prefer harder pulls, and these peanuts tend to be softer sprung than case equivalents. The VG-10 is a great plus though.

I started looking at the Northfield norfolk whittler in mammoth Ivory, which I have been pining after since they were released and thought it to be a great 'Sunday knife'

I had really liked the design of the whittler pattern, but after seeing the 'light' ebony 2 blade version I much prefered the slanted and lined bolsters that it sported. The only problem seems to be that these norfolk also tend to have softer pulls on them, along with the AG russell peanut. I could probably get over it if they aren't too soft, it would be great to get opinions of any owners of the norfolk.

The third option has just come up for sale, and is the TA Davidson that ThievesLikeUs has posted. I love the bone on it, and as I've been liking single blades more and more, that is also great. All round, it looks pretty solid, with a good pull and walk and talk. Also, the ATS-34 seems like the best choice so far.

(let me know if I shouldn't post the photo here, but I don't see why not.)

I really would appreciate your advice and suggestions as well as some opinions on the models (and makers) of the knives I've listed.

All great choices but you might consider a GEC #15 with a caplifter since you will be old enough to enjoy adult beverages now.

I had a Northwoods Norfolk for awhile. The pull on mine was weak - 3 maybe. It was a fine knife, and the fit and finish was excellent, but I always felt like the springs were too weak for my liking.

Take a look at the GEC 66 slim or calf roper. Knives ship free has them in mammoth and they are great knives. 3.5" and easy to carry. 1095 as well.
Here is a pic of mine - 66 slim.

Thanks for the suggestions, they were extremely on the mark! (eerily so) :D

I love the bone on the #15! I am not much of a drinker though, and hardly ever drink more than a glass of red with dinner, but I love leatherwork, so the awl version appealed to me. The #15 pattern is great, and the unXld radio jack is especially so!

I also didn't even consider the #66 with mammoth, that is a great suggestion! It might well be what I go with.

Thanks guys!

I agree, the 66 in Mammoth is a terrific knife. I have the Jack style, not the slim. The pull on mine is 6-7 and I've been told the slims have softer pulls.

hmm....all are nice knives but they are not all in the same league really. If the TA Davison is an option then I can't imagine going with one of those other production knives instead. Now, the Davison is significantly more expensive of course and the others are fine knives, but a really nice custom slipjoint like that is special and would make a great way to mark one of life's milestones.

I totally agree. Customs are in a different league and is something special. Suppose it just comes back to what you are looking for. I'll just say for me, the mammoth 66 was a WOW knife. It was one of the first knives I took out of the package and said, "worth every penny". Even had a couple of customs I didn't feel that way about. It's personal preference really. When you find the right knife for you, you will know it! Good luck. Let us know what you choose.

May I suggest one of the new Fremont Jacks in Mammoth?

They are made by GEC with 1095 and are exceptional knives.

also the GEC 85 is one of the best patterns out there, especially in smooth buffalo horn :)

I’ve looked at the freemont jack, along with all the other Northwoods and while they look great, they're just a little bit too large for me, unfortunately. I've also been pining after a GEC easy open bullet, but never seem to find the right model for sale.
I think an easy open 2 blade jack, between 3 and 3.5 inches closed (Maybe 3 1/4 inches or so) would be great, but I never see any that small. I might have to place an order with Ken Coats (I love the look of your Coats easy open), or some other maker but I have no idea how the process works, and have no clue as to the pricing different makers charge.
I'll have to send a few emails to some makers to see who can do it.

Yeah the 85 is 3 3/4" all day, you might try to get lucky on the bay when a 25 EO comes up maybe. They are 3" closed. There are 4 on there right now...

Just paid 'LastRodeo' for this Ken Coats easy open, I'm SO glad I went the path of getting a custom. I'm very excited to see what this one will be like! :D

If you want a custom, check out Ray Smith - his turn around time is 3-4 weeks and he is a certified American Bladesmith Society Mastersmith... I had this one made a few years ago

3 1/4 closed.. I think it took him 3 weeks from when I finally nailed down the details. His pricing is great too.

and this one has a pretty strong pull a 6/7

Ray Smith has been on my radar ever since I saw this thread. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...mith-coffin-barlow?highlight=ray+smith+coffin

I love the look of his Barlows, and one of his knives might be the next custom I get.

Really great choice!!! I think going custom was a good decision, especially for something like this gift. That easy open is fantastic looking, the bone jigging is beautiful and I love spear blades for edc. Congrats!
