Here is the problem, I have 4 outside cats, already taken care of 2 raccoons and 3 possums eating their food, but that was when they were kittens. Now the cats are large enough to get caught in the live trap as they hunt at night also. How do I get rid of the Raccoons and Possums now? The live trap is so strong, I am afraid that the door will break a cats tail if it gets hit now. The cats are semi-wild and can be petted but not picked up. City dweller, who does not like to stay up real late. Any Suggestions?

Thank You,
James

I think you are doing the right thing with the live trap. I'm not certain that the trap door shuts until the animal is far enough in, since the bait food is placed at the far end, isn't it?

You're gonna catch a cat or two. But you'll catch the other critters also. I wouldn't think the cat's tail would break if the door caught it. But what the heck do I know?

Hello..

James..

Once a cat gets caught a couple of times, it'll stay away from the trap like the plague!

Around here when we get over run, the Ruger 10/22 comes out, and I just start blasting them .

We had a problem here this summer with Coons Alot of coons in the garbage. No matter what I did they still kept getting into the garbage.. I had enough so I sat on the deck with the .22 and waited..
I think I shot a total of 10 in just over a week...

No problem now...

make a little block under the door to keep from hitting the cats tail or set the bait that will keep a cat from getting its tail caught. maybe put a small block to keep the door from coming down the last 1/2" which should not get a cats tail. you can also quit feeding the cats but only when they are around and only what they can eat while there.

That would also be my suggestion...Hell, you might even kill something that you can toss into the stew pot to feed your cats with.:D.

Just set out a Lawn Chair and a Cooler of Beer for me:D, No, Don't worry about the food it will show up later that night.:D

Really, Have you thought about buying a Bigger live trap. They do make a lot of different sizes.

'Couple of options. As was stated above, cats (and raccoons) learn REALLY quickly to avoid live traps after they've been caught a few times. The door won't break their tail when it closes, it just might hurt a bit. Don't put a block in the way as the door must close completely for the latch to hold!

Simple solution, bring in the cat's food every evening and put it out again in the morning. The cat's will learn the pattern and the night invaders will eventually go elsewhere for their snacks.

Although, shootin' 'em is much more fun! ;)

I do appreciate the suggestions.

I think I will just put up the temptation to the night invaders and let the cats do what they do naturally. They have been bringing me squirrels at night, half eaten to show off their treasures. And since we have had the cats our chipmunks are gone for good. One week I took out 75 out of the backyard alone. I know those will not be coming back either. But no more munks, squirrels, rats or moles in the past month eating in backyard. But the possums and coons have driven me crazy.

Have a great day,
James

Do these Cats Hire out, I could use their skills around my place.:)

Bring the cat food in at night, put it out in the morning. It's the only thing that works short of actually killing the raccoons. As a bonus, you won't get big ant trails wandering into the cat's food dish.

Personally, I don't have a problem with killing raccoons, but the namby-pamby city council won't let me shoot a weapon while inside the city limits, so moving the cat food is the next best thing.

I read somewhere that a Busse will do a good job on a raccoon. No reason why it wouldn't work as well on a possum.

I may have to take a sword off the wall and become a mall ninja. But if I do, no pictures will be posted.:D:D
