A year ago, my precious, beautiful little niece presented us with a wonderful little baby boy. Had his little party this weekend. I'm lucky in that his father (fine young man, and he has lost the facial jewelry- plus I have seemed to inherited a father figure role, as he lost his dad many years ago) appreciates a good knife. He has several I've given him.

Already down in my gun safe I have a 'first .22 rifle' for the little guy, his name is Connor-- a 'Chipmunk' mini-rifle.

But what knife, produced by Schrade in the year of his birth (2004) shall I add to the safe? Plenty of years ahead to stash away other knives, but this one... what do you think? Cheap or expensive, I don't care. Suggestions welcome! I am flat out baffled.

Hmmm...since this in all likelihood will be his first [hopefully of many] cutting tools, I would think you would want a single blade folder w/a secure lock...not too large so that rules out Folding Hunters....too bad Schrade did not make a dedicated "PEANUT" like Camillus and Buck and others offer....kind of points me towards a SJ folding pocket knife or some of the Schrade "high-tech" pocket folders such as the Badger, Silouette, XTAC, etc. They might fit the bill. SMKWs has the Schrade 2-blade Trapper with main blade and saw blade...currently out of stock but that could change. What boy does not like to saw stuff? Who says you have to limit him to one knife? Good Luck...thats decent of you to plan ahead for the little guy...

Hmmm... a boy's first knife should be a barlow design. A good one, not an expensive one. First knives are learning tools and are more likely to be abused or lost. I would put back a more expensive fixed blade for say the 16th birthday. By then he has had time to learn how to respect a tool and will be big enough to have an interest in hunting larger game if, that is, hunting and fixed blade knives are not outlawed by then like switchblades.

Just my opinion as a grandfather.

My grandfather gave an OldTimer 34OT as my first knife. As a result, the 34OT is the OldTimer to me, a very Grandfatherly knife.

Good Luck with your decision.

I agree with Codger
There's a few nice 206 Balows that come up on e bay from time-to-time and they'd make a perfect "giver".
As for a put-away, the Schrade D'Holder with Green Maple would be ideal (unless of course you'd like to give it to me instead - I'd appreciate it right now!!).
Or, a nice Schrade 85th Anniversary would be a very nice "put-away" .

I would put away a 8OT for the little fella then teach him how to use it properly. Four inch stockmen should be issued at birth in my opinion.

Let me say that I have given first knives to relatives and it has always been SAKs, but 2004 is special.

I also tend to agree somewhat with Codger, I think a first knife should be good but not fancy, to be used and treasured but also may be worn out or lost or broken. I suggest you save two knives, a standard Old Timer or Uncle Henry for as soon as he is old enough with which he will learn to use and care for, and one (which may or may not be fancier, a model that you like) which he can get later on when he is more mature and will appreciate and care for better.

A Schrade 34OT is a great first knife, 897UH is also a good choice, don't be mad or surprised if this one breaks a tip or gets lost, those things happen to first knives, and give him the other one when he is a mature teenager or a young adult on some special occasion like getting a first job, finishing High school, etc.

The green camp knife is sold out, but they still have the red. At $1.99, it would be a great knife for a young person. I have a 20-year-old Imperial B.S.A. knives that's nearly identical.

What GREEN knife?????

OK,OK....I forgot to switch back to the RED page before I posted the link.... :o....it's fixed now.

Thanks BobW, for keeping me on my toes... :D

Aside from the color and handle printing, the green is identical to the red. At $1.99, I bought one of each. Personally, I prefer the green - the red screams "SAK wannabe".

Best Wishes,
Bob

Wonderful suggestions, all. Thanks particularly to you fathers/grandfathers.. I have no kids of my own.

I have many years ahead of me (I sure hope!) to give this kid knives, Schrades and others, of course. But something kinda special for the year of his birth, actually made in 2004. Maybe just the 34OT in the anniversary tin with the little money clip. As has been suggested here in the past, that particular knife does say 'Schrade' in so many ways.
