Just wanted to say that this site is bada**, since joining I have purchased a Spyderco PPT and a DPX Hest 2.0. Love both knives but have to say the Hest has became the EDC. I dont know how to sharpen nor can I seem to find any local sharpening services. Anyone in the Hampton Roads area know of any knife sharpeners that are local. Hate having a dull blade. Allowed a guy at the gun show sharpen my PPT and now I dont think it would even cut thru hot butter. Thanks for any advice ones may give

I'd be very wary of "professional" (guy with a bench grinder) knife sharpeners. Just make sure you ask a lot of questions before you trust someone with your knives. I think there' a couple horror stories floating around. There are a few guys on the forums who offer sharpening services who are actual professionals. Also, you could pick up a decent stone or guided system, some cheap knives and learn to sharpen.

Richard J here on the forums has a real quick turn around time on sharping and does a very nice job. Ask him about paper wheels, a good sharpeing system that is not much money. Guided systems are good also but some can get up in price ($200-$400) Wicked edge, Edge Pro but take the guess work out of sharpening once you get the hang of them. My neighbors really enjoy the fact that I invested in them. Best of luck to you and as said stay far away from bench grinds no matter who is using them.

Most brick and morter knife shops offer sharpening services...

But, you don't want to be that guy who owns nice, espensive knives but not a sharpener do you?

Allow me to rant a little sir..."Do not buy another knife without getting a quality knife sharpener, a single sharpener will sharpen many knives. Don't become the R-tard with many knives, but too cheap to invest in a simple sharpener." End rant.

Grab a sharpmaker, if you look around you can find them under $50. Very simple to use, and a good place to start.

Sharpmakers are great but if you need to remove some steel, get the DMT aligner system with the 4 stones for $50 to 60.

DMT and sharpmaker, crock (ceramic rods)sticks are all I ever use.

No powetools except dremel for machetes, axes for restoring bevels, de-chipping etc.

Razor sharp every time. 25 yrs plus experience.

Slow sharpened is well....slow. But youll learn as you go. Also DMT Serrated Knife folding "ice pik" diamond rods are GREAT.

Especially on Spyderco. Use water in a drinking glass longer than the pik. They last longer that way.

Get a Spyderco Byrd or two to practice on, one serrated, one plain edge.

Before long you'll be sharpening on the bottom of old coffee cups..learning all about stropping...Then you'll want a forge after awhile...

Its a wonderful disease

Im going to pick up the Spyderco Sharpmaker. Worth a shot, planned on pick up a Chris Reeves Small Sebenza but refuse to until I master the sharpmarker

I'd get the diamond rods for the sharpmaker, it sounds like you have some metal to remove.

I know there has to be some Hampton Roads guys that can help me out with finding someone local that can sharpen these 2 knives for me? I will practice with my other knives but these 2 I need sharpened asap.

As a complete newbie I was able to get good results - right off the bat - with the DMT Aligner from Amazon.

I have a Sharpmaker but have yet to master it.

Either way, practice on cheap knives and watch the videos on YouTube.

It's easy. You can do it.

So, what country and state/province/political local contains Hampton Roads? You might get a better/more logical reply once you narrow down your general area. I however do not suggest including your full addres or anything similar. Town is about as close as most folks add to their profile online. If you find no local option, I also would suggest richardj on this forum for a mail order option.

As for your selection of the Spyderco Sharpmaker, I think you have chosen very wisely. The video alone provides a great deal of information about sharpening.
