Hey guys,

I'm new to the forum, and I just want some helping picking out a knife. I've bought a few knives over the years, but most of them are cheap and flimsy. I'm still in college so my budget is a bit tight; I'm looking to get something under $30. I plan to use the knife mainly for whittling.

I found a few knives that I'm interested in. Some feedback and suggestions would be great. I'm leaning toward the ka-bar knife

Thank you in advance.

well i havent done much whittling but i would assume that a thinner blade would be better so id go for the SOG

I have heard good things about the Kabar Dozier hunters. A friend of mine had a pink 'breast-cancer awareness' folding hunter w/ thumbstuds that was actually really well put together.

I don't have any experience with the rest, though.

Check out the budget knife thread, easily found with a quick search this thread contains a large listing of quality cheap knives and their average price. It will help expand your options.

check out nutnfancy on youtube he reviews a lot of high value edc knives so there should be one that suits you. As for whittling I like the buck bantam. Comes in 4 different sizes and is like 15 bucks. Hope that helps

Nice price on that LFK. Here's a review, although at a higher price.

I definitely recommend the Ka-Bar Dozier. That's the best of your list.

Ah yes... the college student on a budget. I have two of them.

The KBAR Doziers are good. 3 out of 4 of my kids have them. the 4th kid will get one in a few years, however if I tell him to get me a knife from my stash he will grab the Dozier--especially if he knows he's going to be the one using it.

Adding a thought to the mix - I just picked up a Benchmade Mini Paka II for about $30.00 - so not much experience with it yet -but the feel and size is about right and the price!
Peace

Thanks for all the suggestions and comments. I'm going to wait a few more days and browse a bit more, before I buy. I'll probably get the Kabar and post pics when it arrives.

That is the best price on the Kabar Dozier folding hunter that I have ever seen. If you have free shipping it is a steal.

It is a big blade. Wide. "3.5" cutting edge. Great strong and thick blade.

It comes with thumb stud or hole. I prefer the thumb stud, but both are fine.

I like heavy thick blades and this is perfect at a great price. I have no idea what kind of a blade is required for whittling.

This dozier is great for slicing. A stunning value on Amazon.

For me SOG FSA-7 Flash I Straight Edge is the best option. Go for it. Is very handy and becomes a part of you gradually.

Maybe a ffg blade like the spyderco tenacious/persistence might be best for your purposes. From my experiences the crkt drifter is not a very good cutter or slicer at all from the factory. The sog flash had some bladeplay issues on the one I bought.
