Hi guys,

I have always been a folder guy. Ive never really been interested in fixed blades so I would appreciate a little help with this decision, because I dont really know whats out there. My edc rotation is a pair of Hinderer XMs and a CRK Sebenza 25. I am interested in getting a 3.5-4 inch fixed blade to work into my rotation. My ideal fixed blade is a Hinderer FXM but they are really hard to come by. Does anyone have a recommendation for a similar blade? I am looking for a midtech or custom preferably handground. I dont want wood scales so maybe g-10, canvas micarta, or even CF. It would be used for light cutting chores mostly, but would also go into the woods with me hunting and camping. I would like it to have a nice kydex sheath or something similar to that, not a leather sheath. Thank you for your help and pictures are much appreciated! -Jensen

Have you seen the Spyderco Street Beat? I'm considering one of those too, very good reviews from what I can see. Production though, not custom. Just a thought....

I'd point you toward Bill Coye's Ridgeback. It seems to fulfill all of your criteria nicely, can't be beat for value for a full custom knife either. And Bill does those sick acid wash finishes too. Best place to see his work is to look him up under Coye Knives on Facebook.

Barring that, the Spyderco Street Beat is a great little blade too. I've got one on the way to me right now. Hahaha.

Eric Fritz is someone who you should definatly check out. Blade Gallery.com usually carries his edc knives. I think they are just what you are looking for.

Thank you so much for the help guys. I am going to research them tonight. I'll let you know how it goes.

Off the top of my head..

Stainless:
CRK professional soldier; S35VN, Kydex sheath, no handles.

High carbon:
Esee 4; 1095, kydex sheath, micarta handles.

A bit larger than the 4" limit:
Benchmade bone collector 15005 and 15010(might want to grind the gut hook off for the 15010); D2, leather sheath, G-10 handles.

Ooops, didn't notice this was under custom and handmades.

You want pictures, eh? OK... you asked for it...

I'm a Bark River kinda guy... not exactly like the FXM or "custom", but I live by 'em. I'd find a good knife first and then have a kydex sheath made for it (say from Godspeed Tactical)

Highland Special CPM D2 (my favorite knife). It does very well as an EDC for me. Overall 7.95". Blade 3.875". Not quite sure if you'd prefer color choices, so I'll just post a few.

Also. Blind Horse Knives makes good custom knives.

BHK-T1 (I'm sure they could easily make a larger version for you)

BHK-Ti (with sheath)

Large Work Horse in D2 (green) (your choice of steel and grind, I think)

Large Work Horse in D2 (orange) (I believe they'll do a custom kydex for ya as well)

Hope I didn't pollute your post with too many pics :D

If you like your Sebenza, it would be hard to go wrong with a CRK Nyala. :)

I actually have a nyala with custom scales but its just not for me. I love crk but the nyala just didnt do it for me. I'm selling it as we speak.

That bhk-t1 looks awesome! I have been talking to big Chris and I'm going to have him make me a blade. Hes a really nice guy. Thank you all for your help.

Good decision on Big Chris. He made me an EDC fixed blade a year ago and he does top notch work.

Yea. His gallery is impressive and I've heard great things. I can tell by our few emails that he is the type of person i like to do business with. I'm looking forward to seeing his work in person.

There have been a lot of nice blades listed here, but this is IMHO, the best EDC sized fixed blade currently in production without exception

Busse Anniversary Mean Street Limited... it's amazing

Would suggest a Dan Crotts or Bob Dozier - very practical, precisely made perfect edc'ers imho (not sure, but Dan may be Bob's son-in-law...?)

The best and most useful sheath to me is horizontal kydex - easy enough to grab one-handed even if wearing a jacket.........none of this high-elbow stuff with a vertical sheath

Blades are D2 - easy to sharpen, and, keep a good edge...

.....let us know what you get

Thanks so much for the help guys! I really appreciate it. I have alot of pondering to do. Thank you for all of the replies and the great pictures.

I just picked up this little Adam Desrosiers-made knife;

I've been really checking myself when it comes to spending money on knives these days, since there never seems to be enough to go around, (money that is, plenty of knives to go around :) )

Just couldn't help myself with this one, though. Cost me $200 on the BF classifieds and I'm pretty sure its resale value is probably in the neighbourhood of twice that. Only took about 7 years to stumble across one of Adam's knives, and especially one so perfect for every day stuff, at this price. So, my advice is be patient and keep your eye on the secondary market, especially on dealer's sites just to get an idea of what stuff is worth and when you see what you want, at a low price, pounce like a tiger!
