For real hiking is the Gen 1 ECWCS parka or Gen 2 ECWCS parka better? why? i can get both brand new for about 70 usd.
i like the gen 1 because of the ole m81 woodland pattern,(wont be mistaken for current Mil), and new gortexs( gen 2) either come in Marine digi patterns( a big NO NO for civilians to wear) or coyote tan.

hmm Can't wear digi patterns as a silly-villian? I have seen them put on almost everything up to and including a garter-belt. So, since I think Coyote tan is not something I would care to wear I vote digi-fy it. But I honestly have no good info about either jacket so can't help in that part of the choice.

If a Marine catches you with authentic marpat and you dont produce a mil ID of some form, you risk "wall to wall counseling". real marpat has the eagle globe and anchor symbol of the Marines imbedded in the pattern. not something they will take well.

Being ex-Army I don't spend time worrying about what a Marine takes well <friendly competetive wicked grin> wall to wall counseling might be sort of fun... I doubt highly they would really do anything but if they really bitched I am pretty confident in my own abilities to walk away regardless of if they are standing or laying on the ground when we part, if I am feeling real polite I might thank them for their service as I leave. As I said, I have seen it on a bit of everything. I wouldn't wear it because I find it tacky and don't choose to though I do wear my old BDUs for yardwork. I personally have always preferred my old tiger stripes/khakis and the woodland from the older BDUs that replaced those. Though I do actually have one of the digi-patterned garter-belts of which I mentioned. Some one thought it was a good choice for my bachelorette party present. But if you are concerned about being harrassed by a Marine please take that into account when deciding to get the other jacket.

thank you for your service. i decided to go with a british army windproof smock. half the price twice the storage.

A good choice for reasons other than the pattern.

Seriously though, I doubt any Marines I know would be concerned with a civilian wearing a commonly sold gortex jacket just because of a digi-cam. Aside from the fact there are at least 50 differect versions of digi-cam besides marpat. Many of which Marines don't even use, such as the Army ACUs and the Air Force's version and the Navy's version and...a few slightly silly urban versions including pink. Now if you were doing something unspeakable to the jacket and pretending it represented the Marines, or in full uniform with patches ect.. I would have to help them out on their counseling of you. But just wearing a jacket? Nah, I don't know any Marines with that little mental capacity, though there are some...<another competetive grin around the area> that come close.

thanks. pretending to be military is dumb/ illegal( stolen valor). From listening to them talk to each other( i have many mil friends, all over seas atm). y'all speak a coded type of language. using lots of acrynoyms. For a civilian to try to pull that off would be futile. I dont understand the logic of allowing civilians to buy real Mil patches, to buy them, they should have to present a VA card, VFW card or current mil id. my .02 for what it's worth.

Given that the GEN II was replaced by the Gen III due to inadequacies (like wearing a plastic bag), why would you want a GEN II?

Light pink and faded grey are difficult colors for the eye to track, especially at dusk and dawn and at night with artificial light. All my goretex gets left folded in the van and I end up with a wool jacket and tarred canvas poncho. YMMV

Either way, have fun out there,
Mark
