First, thanks to spoonrobot for the help on the Surefire Alpha. I want an new EDC knife and I kinda want to upgrade. I have carried Spyderco's and Benchmades for the better part of 15 years and have recently being using a new CRKT M-16 that I really like. As for the new EDC knife it will be a gift to myself. I have considered the following:

Surefire Alpha
Emerson Commander (waved)
Emerson M-wave
Spyderco Chinook I & II

I like the one handed opening feature alot and would prefer it to be tip up carry. So I need some advice and if anyone could offer up any other choices I would greatly appreciated it.

Commander, definitely. There's really nothing not to like about it. It serves as an excellent utility knife, and was designed to stand up to the rigors of Special Operations uses. Mine has never let me down.

Have you looked at the Spyderco Manix? More versatile blade shape than the Chinook, but siimilar construction. One tough knife.

Chinook II

This is a really great EDC or SD knife. Great feel, excellent steel and solid lockup.

I would recommend the Lone Wolf T2 Ranger. I enjoy the one that I have and plan on getting another one in case I lose it. It is a tip down carry, but I haven't had any problems opening it rapidly when I pull it out of my pocket.

If you are considering the emerson because of the wave feature remember that there is a very easy non permanant mod that you can do to any spydie and have wave style opening. Just put a zip tie through the spydie hole so the square part is on the blade spine and trim off the excess plastic. I did this to my rescue and it was extreamly reliable. I actualy used a lighter to melt the plastic a little to make it look better.

Yop, I may not understand english well enough to figure out what you actually did to your Spydie rescue, a few pics would definitely help :)

I'm sorry I have no pics. If someone could let me know how I can attach a MS Paint file to this post I could show you a drawing or the modification.

Someone's going to say it, so it might as well be me:

SEBENZA!

There, I just had to get that off my chest. Now I feel better .... ;)

Not to hijack the thread, but just get a few zip ties (cable ties), tie them through the opening hole and play around which position you like best.

Another vote for the Manix. I am going to order mine next week. Just waiting for a couple of friends to make up their mind for a collective order.

Your right about the tip up. Not too much of a problem though as there are a wide selection of tip up knives with opening holes.

The best knife for the money right now is the Benchmade Rittergrip by far. I have customs, and high end productions, but nothing is better for an EDC. Everything about the knife is awesome.

Have you looked at the Emerson Hardwear line? Two sizes, light weight, tip up carry right or left, hole opener. Or possibly Spydie Jess Horn, also light weight, tip up, another good knife. Hope this helps, Marty :)

BTF-coated Commander, plain.
Excellent ergonomics, sturdy recurved blade that cuts like hell, great materials (154CM, titanium and G-10) and the Wave feature is the fastest way to open a folder.

I have a mini and I ordered the fullsize. I am so impressed with this knife for EDC.
