My wife is planning on getting me a knife for my birthday Thursday and I'm trying to choose between the peanut and the mini trapper. Come on guys I need your input as I can't make up my mind as to which one I like better. Tell me your thoughts. Thanks,Travis

Both are great knives, but to help decide, we need more info. What's your job? What sort of pants do you usually wear? Would you be using the knife in the field (hunting, camping, fishing) a lot?

I agree with Mark, we need to know more. All things being equal, it's a matter of taste, but this is not equal. The mini trapper is a 3 1/2 inch closed knife while the peanut it just under 3 inches. Different class of knife. It would be like comparing a Ford Focus to a Ford Fusion.

The peanut is a great knife for an active urban/suburbanite. It handles small cutting jobs just fine, does not take up much room in the pocket, leaving room for other stuff. Won't freak out people at he office or church breakfast. The mini trapper is a larger, heavier knife for more of an outdoor role.

A lot of the choice depends on what you will be doing with the knife and how dressed while doing it.

Carl.

its a tough one. like Carl said, tiny trapper for an outdoorsy role, peanut for edc
I have the both. I like the peanut because it has cv steel and preferable blade shapes.
I never use the tiny trapper because i don't like the spey blade.
As of late, the short handle of the peanut has been annoying me a bit. I can't help but have big hands. However, the blade length does take care of everything i need it to take care of. I'm going to to try the case pen knife, which has a better handle length.
The best thing that you can do is go to a store that sells case knives and handle both of them and see which one you like. Good luck

I mostly wear khakis at work and jeans on the week end. I'm leaning toward the mini trapper cause I spend a lot of time outdoors hunting and fishing. Squirrel hunting is my favorite to do with my son. The office I work in is very knife and gun friendly so no worries there.

As much as I like my peanut, sounds like the mini trapper would be a great fit for you. Let us know what you get and how it works out please.

The following of Peanuts here is very strong. I have only had a few, and my first response when I got one in the mail was, What the heck ?
Must be some sort of a bad joke. But in the pocket it went. For the first few days, I was constantly checking to make sure it was still in there. Plus it was a good excuse to fondle and examine it. I honestly didn't give it a long enough run to make an honest opiniion, but I will say that whenever I did need it, it did exactly what was needed of it, for normal daily tasks.

That said, I was hooked on the mini trapper as soon as I got one. The first time I held one, I knew that wouldn't be the last one. It still is small enough to disappear in pocket, although I wear blue jeans 7 days a week. It feels like a bigger knife than it is, and fits my big hands perfectly. Not because it is a big knife, but the shape fills the hand nicely.

Its a very personal choice, so my recommendation would be to buy one of each pattern, and see which one really works for you. Not sure what your budget is, but quite a few folks here have bought Rough Riders in different patterns to try them out. By reports, they are a very decent knife, and can be had in different patterns and colors for around 10 bucks a piece.

Hi guys!

The Trapper is much bigger so you have more knife in your hand. The peanut fits much better in the pocket. Both are really great knives, which can get used very hard. Both I used for EDC, which one is better is hard to say. So (as usual in this forum), let your wife get you a Mini Trapper as a gift and buy yourself the Peanut. You can change the range, for sure :D

Kind regards
Andi

I've never had the Mini Trapper,so I can't comment on it.But I do edc a Case Damascus Peanut 24/7 and all I can say about it is that I absolutely love that knife, period.

If you haven't already chosen - that a look at the Case Swayback (2 blade) or the Swayback Gent (single blade). It's probably right between a Peanut & the mini-trapper. Very pocket friendly & the wharnie blade makes it very useful in an office environment. IMHO

I'm a fan of both for different reasons. The peanuts a small and useful and disappear in your pocket but mini trappers give you more of an edge. Here's a comparison pic of a peanut, tiny trapper, and mini trapper. Many people aren't fans or don't have a use for the spey blade on the mini trapper but there should be a few out there with wharncliffe or pen secondaries.

If you were leaning towards the Peanut I would have thrown out "small stockman" as an alternative since I really love the sheepsfoot blade. But, since you are leaning towards the mini trapper then that's where you should go. I carry a peanut a couple of days a week, but I mostly carry a medium stockman (the smallest of the mediums) and really love it. If the peanut had a sheepsfoot or wharncliffe blade I would probably go that route. (That actually sounds like a nice knife - a peanut with a wharncliffe blade).

With use, I also find that I like the Spey blade more and more!

(although mine is a Scharade)

Mini trapper for squirrel hunting, I bought one in CV just for squirrel hunting. It did really well on the tasks asked of it and the 07 is one of my favorite Case patterns. A big medium knife is what it really is, you can get lots of use out of one for sure.
Congrats on whatever you choose, the Peanut if a great little knife, it packs a huge punch for it's size.

In almost any comparison of the peanut vs. ....., the peanut gets my vote. For almost any job you need a pocket knife to do, the peanut has you covered. I find myself doing things with a peanut that I used to do with larger knives, and the peanut somehow manages to do it better.

The wharncliffe blade is extremely useful in a small knife. That's why I like my mini copperhead so much I think. It's just barely bigger than a peanut. Here is a picture with a peanut, a mini copperhead (my all time favorite small knife), and a swayback jack. Great everyday knifes, all.

Now, I do think the mini trapper would be perfect for you as those little guys would not do the squirrel and outside duty as well as the mini trapper. I have a couple of them and I like them better than a stockman, especially the ones with the wharncliffe secondary. I'd be all over a wharncliffe mini trapper with yellow handles and CV blades or one of the new Sparxx jigged white delrin jobs.

Thanks again guys for the advice. I already have a swayback jack and a mini copperhead so it will probably be the mini trapper. My wife has also said something about a very nice Boker copperhead with nice stag so we shall see what she comes home with tomorrow. I will be sure to post up and let you fellows know which one I end up with.
