Ok im in the market for a new skinning/hunting knife. Im trying to choose between a buck skinner 103 or a Case 518 leather drop point hunter. Any suggestions on which is the better buy? Both seem to be very similar in size shape and price. I know case used to be one hell of a knife but im unfamilair with their new products. I have only owned one buck knife, but do to its poor quality, have never purchased another. I realize this may have been a fluke but it turned me off to the brand.

That being said, any opinions?

I'd go with an older Buck skinner. Check E-Bay or the Buck knife for sale forum. The older Bucks used 440C steel.

Before you buy ANYTHING! go look at a Buck Kalinga Pro. It was re-introduced after a number of years and has NO rival as a skinner. You won't find a more upswept blade on the market. The blade is BOS heat treated S30V and nicely handled in Rosewood. Pricier than most, but then you're paying for what you get. It is also available in a folding model with the same specs.

Stevo, hola

That's exactly what I figured save for the very small handle. Seemed spot on for the ballpark the OP was pitching in. Nice follow up, cheers.

Buck makes some good hunting knives, and I don't know much about the skinner.

Check out the Buck Vanguard.

It has an elegantly designed tip that makes the opening cuts a breeze...

i prefer my hunting skinning knives to have gut hooks.. just used to them i guess. those older buck knives as mentioned are tits.

That H1 is a very nice knife, quite robust too if it ever needed to be put into rough service. VG-10 is a one of my favorite stainless tool steals!

Kis, yes Andy makes a great knife with some awesome handles!

BaldTaco-II, I will try and get an in hand pic of the Queen so that the proportions are more apparent. The blade stock is D2~ 3/32" (.910") and is fully flat ground all the way to the spine.

If you can afford it, I vote for the Bob Dozier Master Skinner in D2. Hulluva knife with one purpose, dressing and skinning game. Thanks to all. Moose

southern cross great pics i have'nt had supper yet & those ribs look delicious. you're pretty
handy with that blade.
