My nephew Scott, Lt., USMC, infantry, is wrapping up 10 weeks at OSI school and is due to receive travel orders in a few months. He has about $300 to buy a knife. He does not know about knives and I want him to have the best his money can buy which is why I am posting on this forum. He described his flak jacket as having 2 overlapping flaps held by velcro with a V shaped area specifically for a knife. He was told the best knife is one that will penetrate a Sappi plate and have a coated blade.

I would like to get your recommendations for the best set up including sheath. I will buy the the sheath. I don't want to get anything too large but of course, not too small.

Thanks. Scott is a great guy and he needs a great knife. Once you identify the knife I will then have to find one for sale.

I'd recommend a Mean Street or Satin Jack. Both are good-sized field knives, without being very large or heavy. The Mean Street is smaller, with a 4" blade that is fairly narrow. It's a good all-purpose utility knife, that could be used in self-defense if necessary. Satin Jack has a wider, longer blade, 6". It's similar in size to the classic Kabar. In between these two models is the Badger Attack - 5", blade width similar to the Satin Jack.

Unfortunately, none of these models is being sold by Busse right this second. HOWEVER, I would call the shop and see if they can help you out. Variations of all these models have been made recently, so they may be able to find one for someone who is deploying. If the shop can't help, you can try the Busse sales forum on this site. It's a clearing house for people selling knives from their collections. If neither of those options work, contact me and I'll see what I can do.

You'll also have to find a sheath. I recommend kydex by Okuden.

I would expect that Badger Attacks could be hitting the Company Store sometime in the near future too.

Ditto on the Badger Attack TAC, probably see some at the company store soon.

If you'd be interested in the Ratmandu you might contact Eric by email at the Swamp Rat Store (do not call the shop) and explain your circumstances.

The Dumpster Mutt might fit his needs as well.

And yes, Okuden would make a great kydex sheath. The other sheathmakers make excellent products as well.

Given the budget, it might be worth getting 2 Swamp Rats. If one is lost or destroyed (unlikely, but possible). There would be a second waiting to take it's place, rather than having to wait to find a new one, ship from the States, etc. etc. Always a good idea to have a backup.
