Need help deciding on Japanese cutlery...

I'm getting married on October 27th and I'm trying to figure out what Japanese cutlery I should put on my Amazon.com registry. I've decided against the large "sets" (mainly the ones with a bunch of prep knives and six or eight steak knives) because they're just too expensive for most wedding-gift-givers and they just aren't practical for a new couple. Anyway, I was looking seriously at the Calphalon Katana 18-piece set originally but I then decided to try to put several highly desirable moderately priced single Japanese knives (i.e. santoku, paring, boning, filet, bread, etc.) I've also looked into the Shun line but would really like some more unique brands. I don't mind each knife being of a different brand and I'd love some advice on some moderately priced knives, preferably with SG-2 or VG-10. I've actually never had an SG-2 knife, but from what I understand it stacks up quite well against VG-10. Anyway, Thanks to everyone in advance for your help!!! Cheers!

After a good bit of research I'm leaning toward the Miyabi Kaizen series for my main workhorse kitchen knives. Does anyone have experience with these? I'm mainly concerned with how they will stack up against the Shun series and any other Japanese knives in that price range.

First of all, congrats on getting married and Yes...you’re much better off picking each knife À la carte vs a set.
I don't have any meaningful experiences with the SG-2 steel or models (outside of playing with them at the store). The Miyabi line (specifically the VG-10 models) is currently the best mainstream knife that I know of and is a better, more refined, and less expensive version of Shun. I’ve posted about them previous in the archives in a bit of haphazardly manner. I can post a more detailed head to head comparison, later if you want.

Shuns are simply the best around for the $$$..especially with KAI's great Warranty and Sharpening Service, you just can't go wrong with them and you'll have them for a lifetime.
