I own a granfors bruk Wildlife Hatchet & many pocket knives, both plain edged & serrated, but looking for something in the middle, a great slicer, no chopping, but maybe pressed into service to split small branches for kindling.

I have narrowed my chioces to either Spyderco temperance in vg10 or Swamprat bogdog in d2.

Spyderco Temperance has a 4 1/2" VG10 blade that is 5/32" thick & costs about $80. ( Blade now available with an ebony ceramic coating)

Swamprat's Bogdog has a 4 1/2" D2 blade that is 1/8" thick & costs about $78. If I read the info correctly, the swamprat's sheath is optional & is extra.

yeap...the sheath is extra....

i would go with the bog dog...
i don't know whether anyone has it already since it just came out...but i have the howling rat and am really satisfied with it...

plus you get a good warranty on the swamp rats...don't know about the spydie ...

Get the Spydie Temperance...That VG-10 steel is awesome, the handle is great, and it comes with an excellent kydex sheath.

go for the Swamp Rat! you won't regret! their garanty say if you break the knife you got a new no question asked! I own several differents brands of knives, my Rats are simply the bests knives I own... There is severals good knives on the market, but I can assure you that only few brands offer the service Swamp Rat give to his customers, they stand 200% behind their knives!

Yah, get the "Rat" if you plan on breaking it.:p.

I like Spyderco, but in this case I'd go witht he Rat.

They are awesome, and the service is unbeatable.

Just wanted to mention these seem to run head to head with the aforementioned BK10, Ontario TAK - SOG Field Knife and the CS Master Hunter.

Interesting to note the CS offering preceded the other knives mentioned in this thread, is well recognized for its utility, and at 3/16", is plenty tough. Additionally, it is still available in two steel choices - again both well regarded. I maintain, it, is a standard for fixed blade knives. Buy this one first and experiment later.

Thanks for all the great ideas & opinions, I appreciate them all.

I do have a Becker crewman, but with the hatchet, I think the becker may be redundant, plus I think the sheath is too bulky. might have to have Eric of on-scene tactical make me a kydex sheath.

I like the the bark river mountaineer, A LOT, at A.G. Russell, but it comes with a leather sheath and I am not familiar with 12C27 steel & don't know how it compares with D2 & VG10.

I was trying to stay with an apples-to-apples comparison.

While the SR ist probably overall the tougher knife, I think the Spydie is the better slicer and therefor the better choice for your requirements.
