I need some help picking out a 7"-8" fillet knife. I'm looking to spend about $20.00.

I actually bought a Kershaw but took it back once i realized it was 420...The steel faq page on this forum said that it's soft and doesn't hold a very good edge. Now there off sale and I'm second guessing my decision  I looked at Dexter Russell on Bass Pro but it's 400 and not sure if it comes with a sheath. Amazon has one w/ and w/out  again.

I know i might be expecting a lot from a $20.00 knife. My friend and i are heaing for a fish wheel this summer (Salmon :) ) Anyway, he has a couple of Cutcos but said we should have a backup to save time...I still want the most for my backup dollar ;)

I'm really just starting to get into knives so all of my knowledge of steel has came from forums and articles. I know i'm probablly digging to deep, i tend too.

Thanks in advanced

Cold Steel's stuff

I suppose if you look around online stores, you could probably get them cheaper. Their Carbon V steel is supposed to be pretty good as well, but it is a high carbon steel, so IDK if you want that or not.

I have been very happy with my Cold Steel. A lot better knife than the cheapo stainless ones I used to use.

I used several different brands of filet knives while working on a charter boat. I found that the Cold Steel knives took the sharpest edge, but they rust very easily. Another brand I enjoyed using was the Dexter white handled filet knives. They take and hold a sharp edge, and they just will not rust. Depending on where you find them, you could get 2 or 3 of them for your $20.

My father has been a fisherman for 50 years, he uses Marttiini Fillet Knives. I even have one, but I don't fish all that often. You can get one for anywhere from $10 to $20 and they pretty much last for-freaking-ever. Just my .02
