I'm looking for a ceramic-coated aluminum rod (or another other type of very durable sharpening rod) about 3/16" to 3/8" in diameter and anywhere between 4" and 8" long. It's going to be part of a very cool sheath project idea I have planned.

Any help is most appreciated!!

I'm sure this is too obvious, but why not a Spiderco Sharmaker stick? I have a couple "pens" that when opened are diamond rods...very durable, work fast, and sharpens serrated too.

Bruz, I think he wants to avoid plain ceramic for durability concerns, rightly so since I managed to break a Sharpmaker rod by dropping it 3 inches onto a desktop. :( Not to put down the sharpmaker because of it, but it wouldn't work well as a portable sharpener. Andrew, I know this isn't ceramic, but what about this diamond rod? http://store.knifecenter.com/pgi-ProductSpec?UE5N You could remove the handle and just use the shaft. Let us know how the sheath turns out.

Thanks Roadrunner, I did not know they were so fragile...cement and re-bar compliment each other, wonder if one glued a small metal bar on one or two sides of the rod if it would not make it strong enough...

Hey, Andrew, Wal-Mart sells diamond sharpening rods by Gerber (I think) for around ten dollars. It looks like the rod slides into a brass handle. I haven't used one before, but I do remember seeing them there.

They're pretty much just chunks of sharpmaker, but the triceps might do the job. I have the standard and the diamond. I've carried them all over and have yet to damage them. lansky also makes about the same thing.

A small piece of wood and some sandpaper will give you a fairly good hone for touchups, and it's easy to have more than 1 or 2 grits with it.
