Need help finding an ideal blade

While a good blade might still be useful, for defensive purposes I would suggest a good stout walking stick and pepper spray. As far as a knife, I would suggest looking at the Kershaw/ZT brands. Kershaw has many flipper models.

If made in Taiwan's ok, I suggest the Ontario RAT-1... hard to find better in the $30 price-range, imo

I live in VA and to my knowledge there are NO restrictions in the state code on blade lengths. Having said that, there could be city or county blade length restrictions that apply. Especially living in close proximity to D.C.:D

I think I'd second the walking stick and pepper spray . No need to let anything actually get a hold of them then . A knife you have to be too close to use it .

I think the Benchmade Barrage (583) would be readily accepted.

I would get him the Black Tanto blade. I myself like serrations.

It's spring assisted and opens quick. The Axis Lock is unbeatable.

You can find them online for under $100.

Good luck on whatever you choose.

Get them an ASP Baton. I hit a Pitbull in the head with mine, and he ran home. Two Pits were attacking my dog, at my feet. A walking stick would have been too long to be effective. The ASP was not expanded, so I used it in reverse. The mushroom buttcap was struck in the center of his head, and he instantly ran home.
Point is, a knife is a last resort. I'd want something with medium range on me, like an ASP, or a 15" long steel pipe, and a fixed blade.
With two people walking together, maybe one walking stick can be used if the other person is being attacked. Pit Bulls can be difficult to stop, they were bred to keep fighting. Each one is different, and may take more extreme measures to stop an attack.
I think a knife would have to puncture the lungs, or vital organs to get one to stop. That takes some strength, dexterity, and there will be lots of blood. The knife better have some grip.
