I just got this Cleaver and would like if possible to find out more about it and its maker .
I believe it was used as a carcass splitter in a slaughterhouse , it is all metal and I haven't got a tape measure nearby , but put a wine bottle beside it give an idea of its size .
Any help would be appreciated .

You gotta love someone who cannot put their hands on a tape measure but can easily find a wine bottle.

The only puzzle I have is that W Gilpin and Co didn't usually feature a possessive nor plural 's' at the end of Gilpin. In every other respect I think the assessment is correct.

I didn't see any reference about the years when they stamped GILPIN and when they stamped GILPINS.

Steve Tall; you are the 'go-to' history and blade stamp wizard! Your pictures tell me everything I need to know. The 7 lb sledge I have from them (via 20 year ago purchase from the Estate of the lockmaster at the Ottawa River/Rideau River junction of the Rideau Canal circa 1930s) only says 'Gilpin' on it. That's why I asked.
