Need help identifying the best lanyard or other system for securing my blade

Hi, I recently purchased a Boker KAL 74 B 50/50 to replace my Benchmade 580 which I lost while working. I chose the Boker based on reviews and cost. That being said, I would like to retain it. I am a wildland firefighter, and I often have to fly in helicopters and work in remote areas with difficult/unique terrain. I am trying to find a lanyard or retractable system that would allow me to secure my knife in my pocket. I use the clip to carry, but I don't want to have it come lose and fall out of the helicopter or my pocket. I tried just using simple P-cord, but it kept getting caught on things and it was a pain to unhook. Can anyone recommend any good systems that have a carabiner or are retractable? If there is a retractable system that allowed me to set the length that it retracts, that would be perfect.

I once had a set of keys on a retractable belt clipped device. I wonder if something like that is still made. Might be worth an internet search. :)

EDIT, just did a search and came up with several retractable key reel devices, some with pocket clips and some with carabiners. That might be a good start to your search.

Maxpedition, T-Reign, Gear Keeper and Streamlight all make retractable gear retainers that should work well for this application.
Retainers designed for fishing nets or handguns could also be used.

Like one of those cords for old phones that attach the phone to the base

That sounds like an accident waiting to happen.
Not a fan of dummycords on knives.
You have the knife in hand and if the cord catches on something the knife stops but your hand keeps going.
A good while ago, here, someone posted about having their folder on a lanyard attached to their body.
He used the knife to prepare some food, kept it in his hand while bringing the plate to another room.
The lanyard caught on a door knob resulting in a bad cut to the inside of his fingers.

Granted, a retractable system, like the flyfishers use, wouldn't have a big loop to catch on stuff, but the potential is still there.
Unless the knife has a sizable guard.

A pouch sheath or quality, fitted, kydex sheath seems like a much safer option.
To me at least.
YMMV
:)

While I was an EFF, I found that outside of camp my folder was useless, had my Pulaski and hatchet for that area, looking back, I think a machete would have been a better choice. For anything else, well that's what the sawyers were for.

I would go with a fixed blade, you already have a belt and with a good sheath retention isn't an issue.

If you're stuck on wanting a dummy cord, I'd look into a lanyard with a buckle.
