A friend of mine who is about to go into an assisted living facility dropped off a big knife with me yesterday.

It's a big, heavy hunk of steel that appears to be a WWI trench knife or bayonet. I'm not a knife aficionado so cannot identify it. I'd greatly appreciate it if you folks can weigh in with your opinions or definitive knowledge as to what this knife is. My friend called it a bolo knife.

Wow. Everything I needed to know about this knife. Thank you.

At the end of the article I read the following:
"The belt hook is in place as well as the hook to engage the latch on the bolo grip."

The button on the hilt that is pressed upward by a spring must have something to do with that quote. I can't figure out what it's supposed to do. Help me out on this, please.
Its a catch to keep the knife in its sheath.

In addition to clearing fields of fire, there are photos of them being used with Bennet-Mercie Light Machine guns, with a bolo stuck in the ground behind each leg of a bipod, allowing the gunner to pull back against the bolos for a firmer grip on the LMG. John

Expansion of what John mentioned in his post.

Also find some #0000 brass or copper wool. You can rub off some of the active rust with it, plus a little oil. It won't hurt the blade.
