A freind of mine wanted me to ID a case that he's had for awhile. The blade is stamed with Case XX below that are the numbers5172 SSP. I've included pic's.

Made in 1977, part of the annual limited run stag handle set...genuine sambar stag handles and that is a desirable large pattern #5172SSP. I believe that the quantity made was 15,000.

ummmm. very cheap imiation of a Case knife made in 1977...
I will gladly take it off your hands. :-)

Just Kiddin' cool knife!

You also may want to check out wrcase.com. There is a section of the site called "Case College", lots of good information on the site about how to decipher the pattern you have listed. They also have a historian that will identify that knife if you send a pic.

Nice example of a Case clasp knife, looks in excellent shape, these are holding price very well, to see what they are going for these days check out e-bay and search "Case Clasp knives"

Sweet!.. What you have got there is what is called a Blue Scroll stag large folder in that run of knives in a Bulldog pattern. These were made in various patterns fixed and folding alike from the Blue Scroll Stag set of 1977(as knifeaholic already correctly dated and listed run quantities) Once upon a time I had nearly a complete collection of Blue Scrolls, save this particular model and 1-2 others. Case also made a run of these with scrolled bolsters as well.

If you you want to know what its approximate current value is I suggest checking eBay for like searches and watch they're ultimate winning/buying bid.
