My father in law found an old 12ga shot gun in the woods, we cleaned it up some but wanted to know more about it. I can make out "Patened Aug 11 1896" on the top of the barrell but I was to know what this on the side is. Looks to me like " The best gun on Earth" then a name under that... Any info on maker or how to find out will help a bunch. If a bigger picture would help let me know..?

It may have been made by the crescent arms company based, i believe in conn. this company made guns for companies to put their names on. If you pull the forend off and remove the barrel look to see if there are proofmarks located under the chamber, these will look like little crowns or stars or other odd little shapes, often you can tell a country of origin from these. good luck on your search. if you have any idea of using this puppy you need to have it checked out by a competant gunsmith.

i haven't a clue who made it, but FOUND IN THE WOODS????

that is friggin cool!!!!!!
