Hi Folks,

This is not mine, but a friend asked me for help with this.

I would appreciate any thoughts, and what kind of value it might have.

Thanks,

Tom

The knife is philippine. You can go on ebay and look up philippine knife and
see what they are selling for. A lot of these knives were brought back by
service personell stationed there as souvinears. These knives are still made.

Yep - it's a Filipino blade alright. Having grown up in Southern Leyte until I was 9 or so and having been there several times since, I can say that it looks to be an itak or a sansibar style (at least to me)... I'd say it's probably a Visayan design.

There are hundreds of variations on the itak/bolo though, as the Philippines is a huge archipelago and just about every island has a number of different styles. As for the authenticity, make, or value I honestly wouldn't know as I'm not a collector :o
**edit** the sheath also throws me off a bit... just about all the ones I've seen for bolos were made of hardwood. I don't recall ever seeing them with leather(?)

Hi Tom,
The tang that is peened over, and the leather sheath usually means it was made on Luzon. What area I'm not sure. Visayan blades normally have partial tangs, wooden scabbards, and often chisel edged blades, beveled on one side only. The time period could be any time from before WWII to now. There's a good thread on Luzon blades on another forum that starts with "R".
