Please do not reply to this post, because I have received the answers I needed. Thank you, to all that did reply!

<strike>I just recently purchased a dagger that was supposed to be made by Jimmy Lile himslf before his passing.

My question is... Is there any way I can authenticate this knife? On the blade It has ingraved " Hand made by Jimmy Lile." The "I" does have a dot over it, and there are no other markings on the knife.

My other question is... Wouldn't he have also put his regular logo on the knife?</strike>

Thanks for your help!

The dot over the I is there to signify the blade was made AFTER Jimmy's death. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news

If the knife blade is script engraved with "Handmade by James B. Lile" it was likely custom made by him in the first part of his knifemaking career. The push dagger was not part of his typical line of hunters, Bowies and Military knives.

"Handmade by James B. Lile" - early mark

"LILE" - late mark

"LILE" with Dot above "I" after death and current production

Hope this helps, I would love to see a picture.

Larry

Bob sent me a picture of the knife:
It is a boot dagger - (some of which have one side flat to be comfortably worn next to your leg.)

He says in his e-mail, "There are no other marks at all. His grind is off also... it starts at the
center at the but of the blade, and as it goes down to the blade, it goes off
to one side. It also looks like a cheap steel, but I wouldn't know i guess. "

The steel is likely D2 semi-stainless or some other carbon steel with age. Likely an early 80's vintage. Lile's grinds and fit are average by todays high standards - I have seen worse than this on some of his very early works. The original sheath is leather with a metal boot clip.
approx value with sheath in good condition is $400-500

Good Luck,

Larry
