Need help looking for a Hunting/Survival knife

I've recently been going hunting but don't have a good knife for it. I also need that same knife to be a good survival knife. Any recommendations?
 
Maybe give us a bit of background as to the kind of things you'll be doing with it and in what kind of environment.
 
I just won a Sean O'Hare Custom Fixed Blade and it has full G10 handle and a CPM 154 Blade as a door prize at ECCKS I'm gonna start using it for backpacking and light bush craft the knife is in the hunting catagory on his website so it's also made for that but it's $400 bucks though and I got for free so it depends how much you want to spend.
 
Hunt hog, Chop/Saw Firewood. If it has a hollow handle then I'll go fishing. And just the basics of a survival knife.

Hollow handle makes the blade weaker so full tang is preferable when purchasing a survival knife.
 
Get yourself a Kabar/Becker BK-2 and try it out it is a good place to start for a reasonable price. That may give you more of an idea what you want from a knife. If you want to spend more then get an Esee 5. The Esee has a sheath that you can attach a survival pouch to so you can store other "survival" items. Both knives are tough as hell and the steel is easily sharpened in the field.
 
My avatar pic, and sig pic shows I love to hunt. I use two knives more than any others, a Fallkniven F1 in vg10 and a Queen fixed blade in D2. Both knives hold an edge well. I especially like using the Queen D2 blade for skinning and quartering hogs. It does well on the hogs tough hair and skin. I have skinned several hogs in a single session with the Queen without the need to resharpen or touch it up.
 
I would go for a Fallkniven or Esee. I have not used a Esee 5, but people say it is to beefy for survival, so for a big blade I would choose the Esee 6.

For hunting, skinning and quartering hogs, the Essee 5 and 6 are a bit large. The Essee 4 is a better fit for that work. I have a 4 and it works well as a hunting knife. I have confidence it would do well in a survival situation as well.

Fallkniven F1.

It's the best survival knife ever made. You can find other knives that are longer, bigger, smaller, heavier, etc.

When it comes to one single knife that you can pack for all situations, nothing beats it. People will recommend other things, but the F1 is king. Period.

Why?

It's thick, the convex grind is ridiculously sharp and is amazing for skinning game and shaving wood, it is light, easy to pack, very strong, rust resistant, the thermorun handle gives some blister prevention (a big deal if you are actually using it to survive, and want to avoid life threatening infections).

People will recommend all sorts of other knives, most of which are larger, are better "choppers" etc. blah blah.

Put the F1 in your pack, and forget the rest.

Thank you for clearing that up... after all these years i finally know the best survival knife.
 
I would say go for an ESEE 4 or 6. The 5 is a bit beefy. ESEE has maybe the best warranty in production knives. fForever warranty, no questions asked, and replaced with a new knife (not just a reground, shorter version of the knife you sent in for warranty). Other brands mentioned here don't offer such a warranty and plus the ESEE is made in the USA. I have the 5, Izula, and Junglas with a 4 in my near future. All have been great.

When's the last time someone snapped a Fallkniven, and needed to use the warranty?

ESEE's rust if left outside even overnight, especially in snow. Also, the grinds while sharp, don't push through wood very easily. The handles do nothing for blisters (especially while processing wood/firemaking) and the knives are generally heavy for their size.

ESEE makes a great knife, but Fallkniven is a step up.

I am sure the F1 is great. It has a great reputation. I would like to own one someday. That said, the problem I would say is that it is quite expensive to only have a 2 year warranty that doesn't cover much, only defects in manufacturing. If I drop that much coin on a single, do everything knife, I would expect a lifetime warranty. ESEE goes the step further in giving a forever, no questions asked warranty.

As stated previously, with the Fallkniven, you'll never need to use the warranty, because they come perfect from the factory, every single time.

Let me know when you manage to snap or shatter your F1. I've used mine to climb a tree to grab a food bag that a monkey stole and took up to a higher branch in Costa Rica. It supported my full weight, no problem.

ESEE makes a good knife. They aren't in the same league with Fallkniven.
