Hey BF,

Im currently, and very slowly trying to upgrade my essentials. My goal is to eventually have everything i own ether be: local made, made in the U.S.A., sustainable (recycled, "organic", etc) or some combination of them all. A lot of you may ask "why?" or might say that that will be a very expensive "mission" and i would agree. However, it is important to me to base my purchases on the above criteria.

All that being said, i am currently looking for:

A good watch that is solar powered and shows direction (compass).

A wallet: i would prefer a "medium" sized if possible. I currently use a trifold style. leather is not a nessecity

A flashlight: i walk the dog every night at around 9-11 pm with the better half and we live in an area heavily populated by forestation and trees and it gets very dark!

A hat: im not a huge fan of logos but if its well made i can get over it.

I am and have been currently been doing this research on my own and i have a few options. I would love suggestions and to know what brands/items you love that fit these criteria!

Thanks for your time!

Al

Casio Gshock
Saddleback Leather wallet medium bifold
Maratac flashlights
As far as hats, visit an REI and see what they have, there is always a good assortment to choose from.

thanks for the quick reply! too bad the saddleback and Gshock aren't made in the US, they are quite nice!

Actually, Saddleback Leather wallets are indeed made in the USA, look at the website. As far as a watch, good luck finding something built entirely in the. US. You could get a Japanese import Casio, usually around $30-$50 more than the regular Gshock.

Maratac lights aren't made in the US. Unfortunately Surefire and Streamlight are probably going to be your only options if US made is a must.

Only some of the models though, and not the medium bifold yet.

Timex might have something in their ironman lineup with a compass, they're at least US based. You can find built in the US mechanical watches, but I've never heard of anything with a digital compass without a Japanese or Chinese movement. FYI an analogue watch can be used as a compass as long as the sun/moon is visible. Also any solar powered watch uses a capacitor that will eventually need to be replaced.

Surefire is the way to go with the flash light, probably.

Hats are actually easy, Pendleton would be my pick, but there are plenty of other companies.

A popular choice is to take a bored(to accept a larger cell) Surefire P60 host body:

And stick one of these in it:

It's a single level drop-in. If that's not your thing, you could try this one:

Malkoff drop-ins are very popular and I would describe it as "the most beautiful beam" for a pocket flashlight.
