I am thinking of getting a traditional buck folder. The problem is the only traditional buck I have used a decent amount is the Buck 110 and the handle was too thick for me. Does anyone know how thick the handles on the 501 and 301 are?

You may not be considering small knives, but I have been thoroughly impressed with my 55. If size isn't an issue...super slim.

Umm...I will move this from Traditional to the Buck Forum. You would likely get your answer here, eventually. I think you will get it faster on the Buck Forum. Those fellas know all things Buck.

BTW, you know that the 301 is a stockman pattern.

Thanks for moving it. I know the 301 is a stockman pattern, I haven't decided which kind of knife i would preferred yet, probably both

Welcome to Buck land. If you want a thinner lockback, look for a 500 Duke or a 501. They are the slimline series. The 500 is discontinued but can still be had NIB on the popular auction site. The 501 is a little smaller. I personally think the 500 is the best all around folding knife that Buck has made.

Largest one in pic and 501 is to the right. Others are 503 and 501-smaller down the line.

500 has a 3 1/8" blade
Here is a pic against a Vantage which is pretty slim

And alongside a 532 giraffe bone which is also pretty thin

Size comparison:

The 532 is a few largeer then the 501,
the 531 has nearly the same size as the 500.

I have my 500 in my pocket this morning. I love this knife and agree with Imafritz that it's a perfect all-rounder knife.

It's nowhere near the heft or thickness of either a 110 or 112 and is so thin that it's very comfortable to pocket carry in jeans. I also prefer the drop point over the clip point of the 11/112 for EDC use by a very, very wide margin.

The 501 deserves a very close look too. For life in the office, I find that a knife in the 501 range is less upsetting to the local natives when deployed. But for me, blades in the sub 3" do just fine for general cutting but not so good for food prep.

If EDC use means pocket carry, food prep and heavy duty cutting chores around the yard or shop, I would suggest the 500 (over the 110 or 112). As an inexpensive alternative, my local Walmart still has the clipless version of 482 on sale for $17.

If EDC use means pocket carry and lighter general purpose cutting (but not food prep), I would suggest the 501. Would also suggest the shorter 501 if you tend to wear lighter slacks and prefer a slightly shorter and less noticeable knife.

Another comparison shot.

The 500 is in the center. The clipless 482 is just below it. I actually like the blade on the 482 better. The green knife at the bottom is an old Old Timer 5OT that is almost identical in size to the 501. The pictures are deceiving in a way. I find that the 501 (or my 5OT) is a much bigger step down in size than the tape measure indicates.

Hope some of this helps.

Haebie, was the tip of that 503 reprofiled? I actually like the blunter, thicker tip on it compared to the more needle-nosed 500/501.

No, pinnah, the 503 has the original shape. These early 500th have
different blade shapes very often.

Hi tempey,

If you look around you can find the 501 & 301 in many different styles. Sorry one of the forum folks will need to help you with thickness.

Here is a shot of a few 501 limited edition knives.
