Hi guys,

I am new to this forum but not to Kabar or knives in general.

I had bought a BK7 a month ago, i liked it so much that i decided to buy another one, this time on e-bay.

I am a bit concerned becase the second knife is slightly different from the first.

the main difference is its coating. The first one has a strong Powder coat with white letters on the blade.

the second one has a smooth coat, letters are black. Could the second one be a Camillus knife? it doesnt say Camillus though.

I'd appreciate your advise before i contact the seller and return it - i am afraid i may have got a fake one.

I think they changed the coating in 2011 from the paint look to the textured look. I'm pretty sure kabar manufactured some painted bk but it should still say kabar, the model number and USA on the tang. It should be roll stamped also. There is a Becker sub forum if you want an experts opinion. Anybody correct me if I'm wrong. I'm sure the boys of the Becker sub forum would like to know about a fake Becker if it does turn out to be one.

Load up a pic and let everyone see... are the letters stamped into the metal? The older KA-BAR version of the BK7 had a smooth black coating and the logo/lettering was stamped not etched like the new ones.

Either way, take a picture, upload it to photobucket, and paste the IMG code here so everyone can have a look.

Pictures are always helpful.
I'm assuming that your new one looks like this?

And that your previous one looks like this?

Both shown are real.

Probably not a fake.

It would say Camillus if it was a Camillus. As everyone has mentioned, Kabar not too long ago changed from a stamped marking with a smooth coating to a lazer etched markings with a rougher coating. Probably the difference your seeing. If you can show pics we could tell you for sure.

Thank You all - i was about to put some pics but N Gremory beat me to it. Yes, mine are stamped (on the second one). So, i guess it is an older Kabar - Whew!!!

Honestly, I was hoping it was real as I like the smooth coating a bit better.

You guys rock !!!

FYI. Old version is easier to strip and new versions coating is more durable. One of each is the best of both worlds. I would strip the eBay one you got and throw some nice micarta or wooden scales on it. And I would leave the other one alone and just start beating on it. Enjoy.

Tueller, that is exactly what I plan on doing. thank you!. This is off track but anyone know if I can get a set of G10 handles for a bk7? Or something better than the Micarta hanldes from Kabar....Surprised nobody makes them....

What they said, both are real. My 5 had the old coating on it and stripping it was a breeze. And it never hurts to have two of the same knife :)

i love how so many people jump on the fake-wagon so quickly. while there are some close calls and a few attempts, by and large, there just aren't that many out and out fakes of BKT stuff.

KaBar, unlike Camillus, is constantly improving stuff, changing designs, improvements, always moving. good.
