Need help on balancing a felt buffing wheel

I ust got hold of a buffer similiar to a Baldor - 750 watt motor with a shaft on either end . Shaft dia. is 15mm ( about 5/8 inch). I have tapered spindles that are held on with set screws to allow simply runing a sewn buff on and polishing away. That works fine.

I recently bought 2 felt wheels with a dia. of 10 inches which are pre-punched to go on the tapered spindles, but they vibrate so bad the machine seems like it's gonna fly apart. I can enlage the hole in the felt wheels and attach them to the shaft - without the tapered spindles - with spacers and nut, but my queston is: Do I need to balance these felt wheels? I'd hate to ruin the machine...

Thanks for any advice in advance!

Hi George,

looks like you were right about the tapers. With those heavy 10 inch felt wheels even the slight amount of imbalance caused the problem.

I enlarged the holes in the wheels so that I can mount then directly on the shaft and bolt 'em in place and they turn fine. I just have to fabricate a small spacer.

Thanks for your help! What would I do without my internet friends? Probobly make a lot more mistakes and waste a lot more time than I already do...
