after lurking around I decided to sign up, I just got me a harbor freight 1”x30” belt sander and a bunch of old knives to practice with. After researching the past couple days I’m actually more confused on what belts and grits I need to get for strictly sharpening knives and machetes and was hoping y’all could maybe give me some advice on what I need. I didn’t realize they had so many different types. That’s in advance for any help

lesser grit number such as 80 is coarser.....higher grit is the opposite.

so harbor one comes with 90 grit I think. good for major stock removal in reprofile. higher grit ones will remove less and better for practicing with until mastered. as ya can fix mistakes much easier. it's a have patience and go slow game until ya master it.

Strictly for sharpening I’d look at 120 and 220 AO. Possibly down to 80 and up to 400 but I don’t think you would use them often. A stropping or cork belt may be worth the investment too, but I don’t know what’s available in a 1x30

Do I need a leather belt also. I’m trying to get my knives razor sharp
The last stop to razor sharp is best approached without power tools, which is only an opinion. I use my little 1x30 with a 60 grit to hog out material as fast as possible with as little strain on the tiny motor as I can manage it it's a major reprofile. I swap off to a 180 belt afterwards because that was what was in stock the last time I was in the store, then move to a leather strop with compound. But I am just a hobbyist, might get more traction on your question in the Maintenance and Sharpening subforum.
