Hello, everyone. I was wondering if anyone here could help me create a satin finish on one of my mirror polished knives.

I talked with a buddy about this, and he says you can do it using sandpaper and steel wool. Can anyone tell me what grit sandpaper is good? Step by step instructions on how to obtain a satin finish from a mirror polished blade, as well as materials needed would be very appreciated.

Please feel free to e-mail me at: Kentdog@home.com concerning this. Thanks, again!

Hmmm, thats interesting George!!! I've just been finishing the blade thru 600 grit and then hitting it on a fine scotchbrite belt. Maybe thats not really a satin finish but it sure looks good.

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

I'd probably do it George's way, especially if it is hollow ground. You can also use the ultrafine scotchbrite pads. You want the satin to run lengthwise and be level, so make your strokes in one direction only. It takes some practice to make it work in both directions without getting little loops in the pattern. Since you only have one knife to do, practice is out.

I do it differently for my knives, but you already have a mirror polish so go from there.

I agree with just using the grit paper you want the satin to be at.One suggestion though, tape off the guard-bolster-handle material first. This way you dont scratch the finish on that part of the knife and have to go back and fix it....Bruce
