Need help on my first Kershaw

So a few years back I received a Byrd Cara Cara as a present for Christmas. Before this, I hadn't really carried a knife, but the knife did begin to find plenty of uses. Eventually, I started carrying it almost everyday. It has suited my purposes fine, but it starting to get a little beat up, so I am in the market for my first knife (that I am buying). I want something new, and Kershaw is not only a brand I have never owned but also is well known and respected, and they make great knives from what I hear

I've been looking around, and have found quite a few choices. My price range is anything below $40, and I have found a few choices:

Kershaw Storm
Kershaw Scallion (the Chive aswell)
Kershaw Needs Work
Kershaw Vapor

I can't really decide between these. The only one that really sticks out due to blade length is the Scallion, but that doesn't bother me. Do any of these knives have that speed safe spring in them for the assisted opening? And out of these choices, which should I buy, or do you have other suggestions?

The Storm, Scallion, and Needs Work have the assisted opening feature.
I'm fairly sure the Vapor only has the thumb stud.

If I were you, I would go with the Scallion.

Edit: And welcome to Bladeforums :)

Welcome to the Kershaw forum!

Scallion, or if you want to spend a little more, a Mini Cyclone, Shallot, Leek or Mini Mojo/Mojito. All are Speed safe, and with the MC, you have the ability to turn off the Speed safe if you wish...

Also, for around $ 45, shipping not included, you can get the black aluminum handled Speed Bump off the 'bay. If you need more info, PM or email me...

SPX

I would say go with the Needs Work over the Scallion. The harder steel and larger blade make it scream "pick me pick me" when something needs cutting.

SPX, you and your aluminum speed bumps! the needs work is the nicest for a heavy user because its got the sandvik and handles that scream "abuse me." also with the straightest blade of them, sharpening on a sharpmaker is super easy. that being said, you will eventually end up getting them all (just ask anyone here) so it shouldn't really matter which one you choose.

welcome to the forums (or family as we have tended to call ourselves).

A new frame lock Scallion going to be here soon. If they aren't too small for you they are a nice knife. All the Scallions now are a liner lock. I am keeping my fingers crossed on a steel up grade on the Scallion. 13c26, s30v or maybe even ZDP-189 would be nice
If you want something bigger that is still slim and has a frame lock go with the storm. They come in 2 sizes, the smallest is a little over 4". The thumb studs may take some getting use to though. They are the same studs that work great on the Blur, but feal odd on the Storm

Hey! The man said he wanted SpeedSafe, at around $ 40, and for that price range, I can't put my Bump down! What a deal!

i know, i bid on the link you sent me and currently am winning. i remember loving the speed bump and the way it made my fellow workers jump when i snapped it open. i just never went back after my first broke. it was right around the time the aluminum handled ones became discontinued.

that being said, he is right, it is fabulous, but id watch it around sheeple. some can't take the weapon look it has.

Just pick any of them...

Because you'll own them all eventually. Whatever you do, don't fight it. Just go with it; be one with Kershaw, and Kershaw will be one with you.

My name is Elarski, and I am a Kershawholic.

Welcome to bladeforums.com, Kurtis, and the addictive world of Kershaw!

If I was choosing from your list:

1. Needs Work

2. Scallion

3. Vapor

4. Storm

SPXtrader pretty much hit all the additional choices if you want to spend a little more...

Don't fret too much over which one you end up choosing...you're sure to end up with more than 1 eventually...

Thanks for the suggestions. As it turns out I had a few things I had to pay, and so don't really have $40 spare bucks for a knife at this time, but when I do I'll probably be picking up the Needs Work.

Since it's going to be a little while before you buy one, you might
want to check out the RAM due out in a couple of weeks.
Street price is going to be around $60 +/-

Here's a link showing it in action.

Man, that looks like a nice knife. What kind of blade steel does it have? I wanted speedsafe, but that looks like it could be even better.

Sandvic 13C26. Great steel.

There's a lot of us here waiting with baited breath on that one. :)

Oh, Welcome to the forums!!

The Needs Work is a great knife for the money, but you can get a Leek on Ebay for $40. The Leek is by far my favorite Kershaw knife (until they make a TABOO!). Here are some pics: Remember that I don't have giant hotdog fingers like Offsetlover, my hand is 9 inches from wrist to the tip of my middle finger.

EVERYONE should own a BORON Leek!
