Need help on the Koval 605 special kit

Got in my 605 from Koval a couple days ago and was very disapointed.

First, the scales are not drilled the same and do not line up when assembled. No big deal, I can fix that.

Second, This is where I need some help. The ball bearing catch on the liner is MUCH smaller than the detent drilled into the blade. This is allowing the blade tip, when closed, to travel over 3/16". This leaves the tip of the knife exposed, which could lead to some nasty cuts. Can I replace the ball on the liner with a bigger one? If so, how? Or should I just send it back and tell them to get their act together?

I really like the overall feel of the kit, and the lock up is great. I would really hate to just give up on it. And I think that fixing the problems would be a great learning venture.

I made 4 or 5 of the 605 kits and had none of the problems that you encountered, however only the first one I did was with the handle scales that were supplied. All the others were with material that was not pre-drilled. No problems with the ball and detent. I did have to shorten the blade about 1/8" so that when it is closed, the tip of the blade is more recessed as it was too close to the back end edge of the frame. I just ground the back of the blade so it had a little more of a drop at the tip and it ended up 1/8" shorter.

I would send it in for a replacement. The one that I put together had none of those problems. The detent popped in nice and snug, and the tip of the blade was completely covered by the handle. I didn't use the pre made scales, but they should be able to get you scales that match up.

I had trouble getting the scales that were supplied with mine to line up and blade is a bit too long. if I rub my thumb over the butt of the handle I catch the tip of the blade.

I would like to see that kit!
Can you send it to me?

The handle kits will fit up real tight . This is so the handles fit good at the bolster. A little reaming of the holes will fix the problem.
Also when you fit the handle scales up to the knife leave the bolsters loose . Fit the scales then tighten the bolsters. The point was to get a good fit at the seam line between the bolster and the scale. The next evolution handle scales will have a looser fit. Somtimes I over do it, making the fits to tight.

As for the blade being to long - when you finish around the rear of the knife handle and take to much off, it will cause the blade to end up to long.
Just take a little of the top of the blade to shorten it or regrind the edge a little.

I like max blade to handle ratio.

All the kits I have seen from inspection have always had great detents.

Darrel, I will get the kit out to you at once. I will get your address off your site. If you want me to use a differant one please e-mail me. Like I said, its not the scales (I did not buy the kit with the scales), it is the liners that do not match each other.

Also I have not touched the kit with any tools other than a torx driver.

Thanks.
